PSA S7201 Competitors?

What other sealed subs are in the same performance bracket?

Is this the type of sealed sub that we can do an apples to apples comparison vs. a vented sub?

On the sealed side, the JTR S2 is probably the most direct competitor in terms of overall output and price. Beyond that, multiples of the Seaton F18 would get you there (sold as a master plus up to three slaves), and at a higher price point but nicer cabinetry, there is Funk.

On the vented side, JTR made things a bit more interesting with the Cap 4000ULF. It's a bit less costly than the S7201, similar footprint (and a foot shorter), and pretty well rules the roost for commercial offerings in the 10-20Hz range on DB.

Four 18's in a single enclosure? Srsly? First thought was the JTR Captivator in various flavors, but those are dual-driver. Paradigm hexagonal subs? Those only go up to 6x 10-inch, for a total driver surface about 1/4 the area of four 18s. Multi-driver tapped horn, like a corner-loaded Danley Cine-Monster? Maybe, but I'm not sure what those cost.

As for apples-to-apples, I suppose it depends on your restrictions. For output, vented subs are going to be more efficient than sealed, so the Captivator 4000ULF would probably be the most direct competitor. If you're looking for "musicality", I doubt you'll care as much after washing the blood from your ears off your shirt collar.

Is this just a bass porn thread, or are you seriously considering buying this nearly 300-pound monster?

I would look at the JTR Captivator S2 or Deep Sea Sound Mariana 24 for comparable sealed subwoofers. For a bit more $ look at the Funk 18.2.

This sub isn't comparable to a ported subwoofer. Port still has a big advantage at it tuning point.

Porn, definitely porn.

Examples please?
For a single killer subwoofer, if you want something extremely higher performance, but also very nice looking, Funk 18.2. If you need a monster sub and don't care about how it looks, the Danley TH221. If you want something nice looking, but don't need as gorgeous as the Funk 18.2, Deep Sea Sound Mariana24. If you just want over-the-top build quality and cost be damned, the Magico Q-sub. And then there are the many subs by JTR.

I think only a handful have received delivery of this sub, so we can only speculate at this point. I think two Seaton 18s with 2 slaves would be roughly the same, but even this isn't apples and apples.

Is this the type of sealed sub that we can do an apples to apples comparison vs. a vented sub?

No, this will never happen. I mean, it likely has more max spl than many vented subs, but the "all things being equal" argument still applies no matter the size.

I see these band pass enclosures a lot, but not many folks own one. Being that there are 4 drivers in one box isn't it really an inefficient design? Why not just get four 15" or 18" subs? In that price bracket why not a PB16 Ultra or 2?

This sub is a straight up sealed system.

As for why not just get 4+ of a smaller sub. This gets into playing armchair CEO a bit. Basically, most folks don't have or want to make a spot for that many subs.

Why not get 4 7201's?

Yeah, most people who buy one of these will probably buy two or three :)

Having dual opposed drivers reduces the sub's external cabinet vibrations, since each driver's inertia cancels that of its counterpart. This is just a dual dual setup. Sort of.

You could buy three or four sealed subs and just stack them. You can get more output for a smaller footprint easily. Its not like it would be any less of an eyesore than this thing.

It doesn't reduce the need for bracing, quite the opposite if anything. The internal pressure forces against the enclosure paneling isn't at all lessened. Dual opposed just neutralizes rocking motion of the sub by cancelling out the moving assembly inertia.

Check out some XTZ 3x12 stacks. These subs are made to be easily stacked by the way. Since they are 170 lbs each, you will want to make sure the flooring is very sturdy before stacking these beasts. But that is a massive amount of output per the footprint.

Missed my point entirely.
