I think my sub preout is dead...how to test?

I have a Pioneer VSX-D514 and, until recently a Sony sub. I purchase a new sub (Rythmik) thinking my Sony died because the unit would detect signal and turn on but no sound. Well, after connecting the Rythmik, I still get no sound and the unit doesn't turn on (no signal detected). If I pull the cord and tap it the unit powers on and I get a thump. This has now led me to believe the Rythmik works but the Pioneer is the problem. My last test included connecting the front R-L of the Pioneer to the sub HPF. If I crank the volume I get sound from the Rythmik. Does anyone one have any thoughts? How can I test the sub preout?

Maybe time for a new AVR?

Connect a CD player, or something like that directly to you sub and see of you get output. If you do it is new receiver time. I assume you have switched cables already in case you have a break inside your cable.

Seriously, I have no life.

Is the sub gain control on the sub amp in the middle for testing purposes?
Do you have an volt meter? If so, you can check the AC voltage on the receiver sub out. Connect an RCA cable to it, run the level calibration test tone and measure the voltage at the RCA end carefully, don't short it.

Conducted four tests.

First I test the current on cable from the Pioneer during a test sound -- no DC or AC voltage or current detected.

Second, I connected a DVD player directly to the new Rythmik sub line in R-L -- immediately got sound.

Third, I connected the existing Monster RCA cable I was using with the Sony sub in the LFE 1 of the Rythmik sub -- immediately got sound.

Fourth, connected the DVD player to the old Sony sub with a single standard RCA -- no sound.

This means that either my Sony sub killed my Pioneer receiver or my Pioneer receiver killed my Sony sub.

Is this possible?

Any good way to really test the Sony sub or simply junk it?

Almost certainly the Sony sub killed the LFE out of the Pioneer.

Just recycle that Sony sub faster than greased lightening.
