The 598 SE version was on a Black Friday sale for $95. As it's not Cyber Monday just yet, perhaps they'll be back down in price tomorrow. Good luck - I hope that you can get a deal!

I do hope so too. Thanks! I like the looks of the ivory, will do some reading of reviews to be sure they'll sound as good as they look.

Yeah, I'll just stick with my AVR jack.
Can't see spending big bucks on a separate headphone amp.
Some AH'er :p

I did start building this portable headphone amp kit last night. The guy at Boxed Kit Amps comp'd me this kit for re-posting my thorough review of his Gobo kit over on his forum. I've had this kit for quite a while, but didn't have much need for it. Figured that now that I have a nicer set of cans coming in, it would be nice to have to check out if nothing else.

Seems to be a "CMOY" design, using a high quality Burr Brown OpAmp with some silly good numbers on the spec sheet. Powered by a single 9V battery.

So, I could possibly compare my phone jack / USP-1 / Pio VSX-82txs / SoloP for headphones.

I bought another Philips DVP3680 (refurbished) as a backup DVD or CD player. To me a disc player is a disc player. I like to have backups for when gear dies. Peace and goodwill.

P.S. I like the first two Santa Claus(e) movies but do not care fore the third one.

While I would agree that a disc player is a disc player, I do like some level of quality. Those Funai made spinners are extra flimsy and when you think about it, it's not saving money to buy the cheapest equipment that will undoubtedly die soon after the manufacturer's warranty expires. It's awfully close to saying "a surround sound is a surround sound" when justifying the purchase of a HTIAB. If someone doesn't want to spend a lot of money but want good quality they gotta bargain hunt the used sector.

Sony DVP-S7700 - $30

Score! I don't personally care for Sony, but you can't complain at the price. This one has volume control on the remote?

I'm still rocking my good old Pioneer 100 Disc Changer. If nothing else, it's a good safe place to store 100 discs.

There are huge differences in speakers, not so much in amps nor disc players. There are differences in amps and disc players, but the difference is subtle. Even some non-audiophiles can hear the differences between speakers but would not hear a difference in amps nor disc players. I know WE hear differences, sometimes when they may not even exist.

I had a Sherwood CD player that sounded better than any other disc player I ever had, and I have had many. But even the lowly Philips DVD player sounds quite good using the coax digital out into the DAC in my integrated amp. To each his/her own. Peace and goodwill.

I used to have one of those. Mine said Elite on it but I'm pretty sure it was the exact same model just marketed to the "audiophiles". It was a nice mechanism.

I like the Sony because it's durable, not because it "sounds better". I would not likely be able to hear the difference in sound between it and the Philips. Mechanically the Sony is more robust and the transport mechanism is near silent. From 3 feet away I can't hear it cuing, tracking, or spinning.

Fair enough! I have two Sony DVD players and a Sony Blu-ray player. I bought the Philips because it has a display on the front of the unit in case I use it as a CD player not connected to a TV. Peace and goodwill.

Yeah, quiet transport is important to me too.

I used to have a Sony carousel style changer, can't remember if it was 200 discs or 300. But is was a beast and I'm not patient enough for the carousel to spin to change discs.

What I love about the pio is that the front end is all mechanical, pull it down and pop open a tray that hold 25. Open all 3 trays where a disc is not playing, and roll the new cds in place. To remove, place a finger through the stack of discs!

The Pio logo fell off of mine years ago! I still have it around somewhere.

Back to the Sennheiser HD598 SE Headphones, I am impressed!

After having a couple of days to listen to them, my first impression is--At $102 after tax, I should have bought a couple pairs! I don't think much else needs to be said, these do not sound like $100 headphones, nor do they really look like $100 headphones.

The balance across the freq range is excellent, and the imaging and separation is incredible. They are nice and light and very comfortable.

It makes me wonder how the upper tier of headphones sound. But, it also makes me wonder how much more $ it takes to get that next little step up.

Comparing to the AKG 845BT (wireless) headphones, I do think the Senn's are better (no real surprise, and we are comparing wired to wireless). But, the AKG do seem to dig a bit deeper with a bit more punch in the bass.

I've also been giving the ATH-50 some play time. These are pretty good cans too, very comfortable fit. They are just a little bass heavy for my tastes, but they are good none the less. It would probably be wise to reserve these for hiphop and other bass heavy tracks.

While I may wish I could've caught that bargain, I'll know later today if the headphones I did get will suit me. When I had Beyerdynamic full cup over the ear headphones years ago, I do recall that I couldn't wear them for more than an hour or so. My ears would get all sweaty inside. The ones I have coming are "on ear" rather than over.

Glad to know you're so happy, best of luck with those. They sure are a good-looking set!

To be clear, the SE version is what was going for $100. The SE version is the BLACK version. Reading up on head-fi, it basically seems like they put the 598 phones into the chassis of the 558, threw in an extra (shorter) cable, and sold it as the SE version as an Amazon exclusive. Probably saved a few bucks doing that, but big deal, I would have been happy at the normal price of ~$170, much less $100.

The IVORY version did not go on sale, that is the "regular, not SE" version.

It's funny, but I like the looks of the Ivory too. But most people on head-fi didn't like it and didn't pick these up until the black version came out. Weird!
