Def Tec Bp 7002 w 12' powered sub's. Set to small or large for 7.1

Just wondering if these tower speakers with powered subs can act as .2 lfe channel. They have lfe inputs and I believe an internal cover. Should I set them to small or large? I know small is recommended with separate sub's, but these speakers are the sub's, right? I'm new, some advice would be greatly appreciated.

The vendor recommended connection is to use speaker wire connections only, and set the speakers to large in the AVR.

Are you planning to also run external subs? Or just the DTs? Are you music only or movies too? If large % will be movies, then you should still be looking at external subs anyway.

I used to own BP7000 & BP7001.

I would use the built-in subs just like if they are separate subs.

So I would set speakers to SMALL and connect Sub outputs from AVR to the LFE Inputs of those towers.

Just the def tecs for now. 90% of listening is movies, games, and Netflix.

Thanks! Just got pioneer Vsx 1130k in may. I'm STILL tweaking and learning new things.

ADTG prefers to manage his subs with the AVR (even built in subs).

That's OK too. I doubt you will hear much difference, but you may be able to fine tune the sound better by using the LFE inputs.

I have a pair of GE T2s (same designer). On mine, I only use the speaker level inputs for the towers and set my towers to large (this is also what GE recs). I use my AVR LFE channel to power an external Rythmik sub.

It's easy enough to try it both configs, then stick with what you prefer. Not necessarily a right or wrong answer on this question.

I forget that not everyone uses Audyssey Dynamic EQ for bass EQ.

So for Pioneer, Yamaha, Sony, HK, Onkyo, I don't know which way I would prefer.

But for Denon/Marantz w/ Audyssey Dynamic EQ, I unequivocally prefer to connect the Sub Output from AVR to Tower LFE Input and let Audyssey DEQ EQ the subwoofer.

Otherwise, the Bass on the towers would not be equalized by Audyssey Dynamic EQ.

When I had Revel Salon2 and B&W 802 Diamond, Audyssey DEQ did absolutely nothing for the bass.

Movies and games, I recommend a standalone sub in your future if you want the real theater impact.

Music, probably no need for the external sub.

Pioneers MCACC is supposed to eq the bass, but I can't tell. I may look into a def tec supercube for a standalone sub. Thanks for the input guys. Oh one more thing, any up to date reading material or forums for MCACC calibrations?

You will get more boom for your buck if you look at Hsu, Rythmik, PSA, SVS, etc for your sub.

I have the Def Tech 8080ST and with 455 watt powered subs, I also have an two older polk Audio DSW Pro 600 subs. I have all the subs connected using 2 y cables to the subout of my Denon 4311. I let Audyssey set the level of the subwoofers including speaker distance....... The Manual for def techs say to set speaker to large, with options being LFE output of wire to AVR or speaker wire only. What would the best setting be to get best bass response, Small vs Large(Full Range)? Get additonal subs(standalone for the fronts)? Thanks Guys!

I have towers with powered subs and I can honestly recommend that you set up the towers to 'small' and send the LFE from the receiver to them via RCA patch cords and set the speakers to small via the receiver. Reason? This will free up piles of power for your receiver. It will let the subs alone handle the higher power needed for low bass frequencies. By sending a full range signal to the towers, you are essentially wasting power for nothing.

I agree with the above post, just play with different settings and choose what sounds best to "you".
Bass management is very room dependant, even more so when dealing with built in powered subs where placement can't be varied much.
You won't hurt anything by trying.
