Dude, that sucks. Have you considered looking outside of your comfort zone? Maybe a 10-15 mile drive to work rather than 5-10? Or a more rural area? Some times further outside of the 'city' equals less rent?
Good luck man.
I'm willing to look a little further away, but the GF isn't. Right now we're both about 15mins away from work. I'd be willing to do up to 40-45, she wants to stay under 20. Next county over, we could be paying a few hundred less for about the same places, but it's going to be at minimum a 40 min drive. She ain't havin it.

As someone who commutes about 45-50 minutes each way, I say try to stay closer if you can. It might not sound like much at first, but that time really adds up.

That would drive me insane - life's too short to spend that much of it in traffic. It takes me about 20 minutes to get to work.

The only reason I don't mind the drive is because where we were in NY, we were out in the woods. So the nearest anything was about 20-25 mins away. Most everything worth getting to was between 30-45 mins or more :D However, I agree. The 15 min drive has been pretty nice. We've got a few places lined up. One we're seeing tomorrow and we have an appointment for Friday in case the place tomorrow doesn't work out.

We decided to roll the dice and trust we could find a new place to rent and as if to say there's no going back, went back to the Ashley Furniture store and took advantage of a big sale and bought a reclining sofa, reclining loveseat and oversized recliner. We don't have space for them in the apartment, so we gots to get out.

As many times that I have been to your place I still needed the GPS to find it. Although the road you live on is named after you. I guess that comes with old age. I live less then 2 minutes from my job and still get lost at times.

Nah. lol, My parent's house is pretty out there. It can definitely be tough to get to if you haven't been there a few times.

Maybe with the new job you can get some time off to see the (hopefully) new place down here. I'm sure I'll have a few projects finished by then.

I do hope things work out for me, because at 63 changing jobs is a big decision. I've been on this last job for 18 years. it's a though decision. They did offer me a check for 50k (clear) and a 30k pay raise, but my health and sanity is more important.

Agreed. You need to be winding down, finding a bigger room for all that HT stuff. Especially so you can finally set up those rear speakers and have a 7.4 system, with those other subs from John.

I worked within 15 minutes from home for many years... it's not enough time to decouple from a bad day. I work 35 - 45 minutes depending on traffic now. It's not too bad.
