Lately I've been drinking scotch, bourbons and whisk(e)ys. I found out I have a taste for these complex, in most cases anyway, type spirits. I started with a $10.00 bottle of Evan Williams 1783 which was very tasty. I moved up to $20.00 and got a bottle of Old Weller from Buffalo Trace. After the Old Weller, I knew my whiskey journey was on. I got a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage, also very good, with a bit more complexity than what i had tried so far. Then, I got a bottle of Elijah Craig 12 year old bourbon for $25.00 and finished up, for now, with a $25.00 bottle of Larceny which I'm drinking now. The Elijah Craig is very, very good and so far my favorite.

I have had few scotches in between as well. New Years Eve I had a pour of The Macallan 12 year old. It was complex with smoke and salt flavors, yet a very affable scotch. I couldn't wait to take the next drink. I had a real peat bomb in Bruichladdich that I could hardly finish. A little to advanced for my palate.

For someone new to these brown liquors, I'm happy with all my choices so far. I'm looking forward to trying some Irish whiskeys that go beyond what is offered by the ubiquitous Jameson's. I've ordered a bottle of Red Breast 12 (same distillery as Jameson's) year old from my local liquor store and I'm looking forward to trying that.

Try some Eagle Rare for another good bottle under $30. It's a Buffalo Trace offering and quite delicious. Was a bit better two years ago as a single barrel, but still a stand by for me.

For rye's splurge and buy yourself a bottle of Whistlepig (from Vermont). It will set you back $70 but you won't be disappointed.

If you're interested in trying Scotch, you can get a bottle of The MacAllan 12 year old for about $30.00. A very good and new to Scotch Scotch.

I agree Elijah Craig is an excellent bourbon. One of my favorites so far. I haven't tried the Eagle Rare yet, but it's on my list. So far anything I've had that has come from Buffalo Trace has been very good. I have had Knob Creek rye and liked it. At $30.00 a bottle, it's closer to my budget but I have heard good things about Whistlepig. Whistlepig is a Canadian blended (with U.S. whiskeys) whiskey and bottled in Vermont.

My neighbor brought me a bottle of Grapefruit Sculpin! Normal Sculpin is already really citrussy and grapefruity. Add some grapefruit juice and peel and it is very complex and amazing!!!

The whole state got 60 cases and our store got 3.
Employees got 2 of them and we got a six each.
I tried but couldn't make it last through the weekend
The Stone Cali-Belgium was pretty tasty as well!

Yeah, Sculpin is in my top 3. In one way, I think "why mess with a good thing". But on the other hand, the Grapefruit is more complex and takes it to the next level.

In general, I think the regular Sculpin is a "better beer". But, I still really appreciate the Grapefruit Sculpin and it serves as a good variation on an already great beer.

Ok, I'll admit it. I don't like IPA's. Maybe saying I don't like all IPA's is more accurate. Stone Ruination is very good, and a very few other's that I can't remember at the moment. I can't get past that too strong grapefruit aroma that translates in to a cat piss smell isn't appealing to me.
I like grapefruit, I like beer, but combine the two and no thanks. On the other side of that I'm the first one to reach for a lime or an orange slice with some beers. But man, that cat urine smell is off putting to me.
Isn't there a man rule about not fruiting the beer?

A stout a day keeps, something, something, away.

Founder's Imperial Stout - 90 IBU 10.5 ABV This one is definitely more for the regular stout drinker. Strong coffee, dark Chocolate flavors. Well balanced, very good.

I am not sure if I told you guys about Powers yet, I found a powers johns lane 12 year, very very very good, and very affordable...

I haven't tried anything new lately, I am easy and kind of settled into the fact that for the money the jameson 18 year is about my favorite whiskey, I just have not found another "better" bottle for under $110 a bottle. I also really like the black label reserve for under $50. I have tons of whiskey, the other night me and a couple buddies compared Bushmills 21, Middleton Very Rare, and Jameson 18, out of 4 of us blind testing {although I could tell because 1 I poured them and 2 I am familiar with all 3 bottles and know the difference even if I was blindfolded and couldn't see the colors} we all ranked them the same
jameson 18 #1 {$109 for a 750}
Middleton rare #2 {$149 for a 750}
and last was the bushmills 21 {$121 for a 750}

We didn't get much more testing since we decided to compare them when we already had a drink in our hands, plus the 3 testers {that were GOOD pours and all neat} put us well beyond needing to drink much more, lol...


Beer is bad for you drink whiskey, I am right now, I unpacked my dentons and I am setting them up in my dining room drinking a glass of whiskey to help me sleep tonight..

Thanks Mac. I'm sorry for your loss as well.
I was on a waiting list at my local store for a bottle of Pappy to share with my dad, then he passed before it was released. The store decided to auction the bottles. While I appreciated the money was going to charity, I was like man, I'll never get a bottle of this stuff.

Jameson, Middleton, and Powers are all from the same distiller so that explains why you would like those. I've had Red Breast 12 year old and it's one my favorite Irish whiskeys ever.

PSB No it's actually not overly sweet. Just right. I discovered these last month. I got three flavors to try out and they were all good. Got to get more.
