Actually the sound in the living room is all screwed up. I think the Oppo is crapping the bed a little bit. I haven't really tinkered with the TV settings, but saw in the review that the "movie" setting provided the most accurate color without any other setup so I picked that one. The TV looks a little dim during daylight viewing in this setting, but overall it looks really really good. The color really is terrific and so is the picture.

I briefly tried out the 3D as well and it looked pretty darn good. I'm still not sure I'm sold on 3D, but it sure did look good for parts of Pacific RIm.

Perhaps, although we haven't had that discussion yet. We don't really know each other all that well.

Being able to control the TV with my hand is pretty cool and so is the touch pad remote................at least for the first 5 minutes. After that it's irritating and I hate it. I'll definitely be digging out my logitech remote to use with this tv

Sawz, Adam, and myself all have the 8500 ordered from Amazon. Saws is keeping his, Adam is debating on canceling his order and I'm trying to decide if I would rather sell the 8500 or the 8000.

As Alex said we're getting the 64". I told Adam that about BB. They have everything there and let you add it to the cart, but when you to the step for choosing delivery or a store to pickup, they won't let you pick either.

Completed-ish a the fan mod on the Crest tonight. Found out that either I ordered the wrong size, or they sent the wrong size. Probably the former. The difference is small enough that I didn't sweat it and now the Crest went from being amazingly irritating to nearly dead silent from the LP.

The real test will come after a few movies in a row to see how effective they are at keeping it cool. If all goes well, I'll crack open the Peavey and do the same on it.

I threw a regular thermometer on top of my rec'rs to see what the scoop was. They're both around 105F with the door(s) open. The 663 in the entertainment center has a 4"x4" brass floor drain that I use as a vent right on top of the rec'r. It reads about 98F ... until I close the doors. Then it's like 105F.

The rec'rs run hotter than any amp I'm willing to use. The Marantz' run warm and the Aragon was one step up from being down right cool. Passive cooling is working out for me. It will for you too once you realize the mistake you made by leaving your parents house.

Yea, but the fans help cut down on the weight so much and when they're implemented well, you never hear them. IE the Cinepro came stock with fans as quiet or quieter than the Crown I used to have, albeit it doubles down and uses passive and active cooling. With the fan mod, the Crest is damn near dead silent. The only reason it isn't more quiet is because it uses the two regular fans and a smaller, what-can-only-be-described-as-a-mini-turbine type of fan. I still like active cooling, moreso because it gives me mini projects to do and simple-ish problems to solve while I wait for glue to dry.

I happen to love your cabinet design and the fact that it pulls through to a room behind so everything is accessible. Someday I'd like to do a little bit of a cross between what you have and what Dr. Mark has in his theater room as far as racks/cabinets go. For now I'm stuck with freestanding racks and trying to keep my spare bedroom under 100 degrees. Hey, but at least its quiet now.....relatively speaking

The problem with fans is long-term reliability. Mechanical parts are at least 10 times more likely to fail than electrical parts.

For passive cooling, there is nothing to fail, and let the amp sit there and fry. If fan cooling fails, that could be quite costly.

Of course, there are advantages to fans too. It just depends on personal preference, and where you want to put the risk.

Agreed, but if thermal protection is implemented, then the product can be smaller and lighter weight while still having low risk of damage to the electronics if the fan fails. That's pretty common in a number of products, such as computers. You just have to replace the fans, which can be a bit of a hassle and expense depending on the product.
