The long forgotten stepchild - HB-1 MK2 Horn Bookshelf Speaker
Hsu Research HB-1 MK2 Bookshelf Speaker | Sound & Vision

I know it's a bit over the budget and not what would most use for 2.1 music, but I dare to anymore to find more robust speakers for HT use at this price
Bought in 5.1 packages it's price is noticeably cheaper

I had heard these during AH GTG2012 and while I liked the laid back sound of EMP's a bit more HSU handled very loud output really effortlessly

Of course, actual SQ is salient. And all the NHT speakers seem to sound great.
But, seriously, can anyone find a speaker that measures that well (+0.94/–0.82 decibels from 200 hertz to 10 kilohertz)?
I would guess that Ascend's do

Edit just for ADTG :p - http://www.soundstagemagazine.com/measurements/ascend_cbm170/

That measurement just sticks to my mind forever. How was it possible?
CTRL-C/CTRL-V :rolleyes::p

$300 is a tough budget, I am guessing we are talking about something for music only that could stand alone with out a sub? thats tough... I am crazy about bookshelfs, I like them all, lol...
That being said.. With a $300 msrp I think the winner for me would be the Wharfedale Diamond 10.0, its a small driver but the speaker sounds good, next down the line would be the wave crests for under $250 its a nice set of books for sure... There are a bunch of honorable mentions, most already mentioned here, but to add one the audioengine p4's sound good to me, not as good as the hvl's for the money but I nice little speaker...

Now if you just go up $100 the world opens up...
Epos epic 2's EPOS EPIC 2 BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS (PR) at Music Direct and Carnegie csb1's to name a couple I have bought in that last year... Both audiophile build quality and sound excellent...

So many speakers stored in my brain, I can't remember what they sounded like but I remember my thoughts and impressions when I listened to them, certain speakers stand out. PSB imagine T2 towers, actually the entire imagine line impresses me, PSB is what it is, but them speakers are all worth a listen, they cost what they should, but sound very good, the imagine mini's kick ass for their size, Ascend sierra towers {I don't see the point in spending more than they cost since I heard nothing that can really blow them away}... HSU uls15 dual drive {insane bass quality, again, no need to spend a dollar more}, I can't really think of anything that stands out for under $300, sure stuff sounds good, the nht's for instance, a great little speaker, did it surprise me? No, maybe because I heard so much about them I expected more, even the wave ccrests, they sound awesome for the price, you get a lot for your money, but nothing that would stop me in my tracks, is there a better speaker for less money? Probably not, but if you step up to $400 you get a lot more, if you step up to $900 there are a couple others that pop into mind Philharmonitors, Sierra 1's both of which I would but side by side with the csb1's and give them the edge over the epics, then you go to $1500 and you take another step up in my opinion the last step before you really have to spend a lot of money to get better sound, the Kef 50's, the ascend sierra 2's {winner}, jades, and a few others that hang on by a string and cost more...

So getting the most for your money should be key with speakers under what I call the "I just want to spend money" Budget, the sound should appeal to you and not offend your senses, in other words easy to listen to the highs and lows will be the weak points, the mids should be nice and livable hence the 10.1's and the HVL's, you pay a little more and you can get some nice highs with the good mids {csb1's and epic2's}, spend a little more and you will get better highs, and a little stronger low end {harmonitors and sierra1's} with the nicer mids, then spend doubel thta and get the sierra 2's which have great highs and mids, and can hold their own on the bottom with out a sub {I would have a sub with them}, after that IMO you are spending just to spend, you either want a different name, look, or a more pronounced sound somewhere, like you are looking for a specific sound..

BUT anyway, I don't know why I am rambling today, my vote goes for diamond 10.0's and hvl1's...

Let me clarify this challenge a bit :
I meant $300 retain (including sales), not MSRP. Subwoofer is optional, Ie: NHT's SuperZero and few other option pretty much require it
Bass in small enclose is never easy, cheap or both so I am willing to forgo it as long as speaker is neutral.

For example speakers like Teacs - until I see measurement saying otherwise they are not yet proved to be "good"

Thank I'm Loud you for reminding us about Wharfedale Diamonds - they will always have warm place in my heart

Not sure which one you are looking for, but here few more great options from GR Research:
A/V-1
X-LS Classic kit
X-LS Encore kit

A/V-1 should be very similar in sound to MBOW1/CAOW1 designs by Dennis Murphy (also an option to purchase these built by Jim Salk shop - CAOW1 - home) , but the later fall far from cheap category
Not those, but those are nice too. They were a little bigger than a book shelf, but not towers. I think it was $250-300 range.

I loved these JBL E20's when I had them. Really nice bass for a small speaker. I had the cherry color which looked great in person. I sure do miss them and would have never sold them: 3 JBL Northridge E Series Speakers EC25 Center E20 Set 050036907033 | eBay
That is what counts - the image that the speaker brings to the ear of the listener.:)

While some of us may not agree - all that matters is the enjoyment one gains/gets from their speakers.

While technical stuff such as measurements do play a role - that is not the end be all for ones's listening
enjoyment or experience.

You would be surprised at how many people have enjoyed speakers, before they had seen or known about
their measurements.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of people would say that this particular speaker has good mids and highs and floats their boat, while
for others it would give them a head-ache. By the way - this is not your former JBL

^^Those little E20 speakers had a nice heft to them, so they didn't feel cheap. Too bad they were water ruined. :( I'm not saying they were the best, but to my ears they were good little speakers for a mini system I had. :) I bought their big brother E30 and did not like them, so I resold them.

The JBL Studio 130 is +/- 3 db from 60 to 22 khz and that is good, and are really nice in that
sensitive 200 hz to 10 khz band. A lot of speaker for the current $150 pair price.

The last cheapy JBL that I owned was the Venue series - they took a quick exit out of the house.:)

Oh, come on. It's still +/-3dB up until 8kHz. What do you want? :D
