Can I do better than the Onkyo A-9050 for $500?

Okay the more I delve into this, the more I just want to blow up and start over but bear with me.
No need to blow up, not the end of the world - if you like what you like, then that is cool.

However, once you hear a speaker with better resolution and good off-axis response, and
along with good imaging and sound-stage presentation > then it can/will be an ear opener.

Well last night was kind of an eye opener. I swapped out the Model Sixes for the MC300s. I also swapped in the AVR-1907, leveled out the channels, in Direct mode. Turns out I didn't need a TV to do everything I needed to the AVR, but using the remote sure helped. You can only get things about 75% of the way by using the front panel alone. So that was a success in itself. Right now my iMac is connected via analog; it will be optical tomorrow, but I suspect that won't change things too too much.

As it is, these changes were substantial. We agree that the subwoofer is needed no matter which of my speakers I work with; the MC300s are a far better match to my sub than the Model Sixes. You could just tell they were happier together. It was kind of like lifting a light fog off the sound, going from Model Six to MC300. I've clearly turned in a good direction. I was sitting there last night really thinking about the advice given here regarding buying some different speakers. I can't help but wonder what kind of eye opener that would be. Right now, the amplification side of things has me reasonably satisfied; I am generally more of a lower volume listener, so I was yearning for a "loudness" button that I don't have to fill things out without cranking it, but I suspect someone here will tell me with a superior speaker, I'll not require such a feature.

Good stuff! Needless to say, there are a lot of brands out there to look at; the best advice is simply to listen to as many speakers as you can. If you don't have much local to you, there are also a number of internet direct vendors out there. A couple options that immediately jump to mind in that respect are Aperion and SVS, both of which offer a full refund and free return shipping for a risk free home trial.

Unfortunately that's a matter of human hearing as opposed to loudspeaker quality.

I didn't see any mention of it taking a quick glance at the manual of your AVR-1907, though in most cases, it's not much more than a preset bass and treble boost. Newer AVRs still have the feature, though it's a bit more sophisticated these days. The Denon I linked earlier has a feature called Audyssey Dynamic EQ which performs that function for example:

Okay, time for experiment #2. Change your surround mode from Direct to Stereo. Run Audyssey. Then on your Parameter setting, use Audyssey Flat or Audyssey Bypass L/R. And then turn on Dynamic EQ (DEQ). Turn off Dynamic Volume.

You can always change everything back if you don't like the results of experiment #2. :D

Or maybe just the Diamonds now that I look more carefully at price.

Being a KEF guy, I'd toss out the Q100 as being something worth a glance. They retail for $550, but you can typically find them for less.

I have a soft spot for Wharfedale - it's been a while since I heard them, but I still remember I loved their sound
Not sure on OP's location, but I would also highly recommend looking at Ascend Acoustics - CMT-340 SE in particular

Good front speakers with a nice bass response - can help keep one from a loudness switch

With your budget and aiming at Wharfedale - look at the 10.2
WHARFEDALE DIAMOND 10.2 BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS (PR) at Music Direct

I'm basically wrangling my brain between 10.1 and 10.2, either way something will be in the mail today.

Considering 6 ohm Wharfedales, should I be at all concerned with the "substantial difference in THD" of my 1907 at 6 ohm? Where a 2ch 8ohm is rated 0.08 and a 2ch 6ohm is rated 0.7.

Talk with all of you soon. Ended up with a demo pair of 10.2s from MusicDirect. Not sure I could have done any better for the dollar.

I'm not even close to being done yet, but another listen tonight with what I have really has me thanking all of you. I'm listening to Joe Satriani's Flying in a Blue Dream, an album I have owned for over 20 years, and I just heard a guitar track in this song I have never heard before. Thrilled.

Well this is how it all begins (turns), you are on your way to becoming an audio-nut. Or as one would say, an audiophile!
Continue to enjoy the adventure.

Speakers will be here on Wednesday. The wait is impossible. The more I listen, this Basscube 10S is a box of mud.
