View Full Version : Disallow Feedback In Steam Vent!

Really, I've gotten red chicklets and others have as well for posting our opinions on non-A/V issues in there! I'm hot on some of my opinions but I can't believe that some people are so shallow as to be giving any feedback, positive or negative, on these forums for non-A/V related questions.

The Steam Vent is a place where people should avoid going if they aren't prepared to hear something they don't like. I think of 2 or 3 red chicklets I've received - half of them for opinions I left in the steam vent.

Others are getting them as well for their opinions.

Heck - I just saw that I got a red chicklet for complimenting someones system. Cripes.

Sounds like head hunting to me. Do you know who it is?

Sounds like head hunting to me.

I agree. Not that I'll ever know, but I am convinced that most of the negative chicklets given out are being done so by only one or two individuals.

Do you know who it is?

No member is able to see who left the chicklet (good or bad) unless the individual that left it declares themself in the comment which may accompany it. However, the Administrators are able to see who left them chicklets, regardless of whether or not a signature was left.

I'd be surprised if they couldn't also see who left chicklets for everyone else should they be so inclined to look...

What do you say Clint?

Oh, no doubt. But hey, seeing as we're in the Suggestions Forum anyway, here's one for you:

How about the Administrators 'name and shame' those who are leaving negative chicklets for no other reason than spite? And if you happen to be such a person reading this, didn't that just put a chill through your heart?!!!:D

Not to be a complete n0b (or n00b), but where can the feedback be viewed? It seems every vbulletin installation puts the feedback in a different place.

MDS
10-20-2005, 06:47 PM
Under Quick Links -> User Control Panel.

I normally don't even look at them, but I just did to make sure that is where they are to answer this question.

I see this comment 'Home Depot sucks..that's great advice if you want to build a roof'.

That's because I mentioned Home Depot as a place to buy component video wall plates. They stock Leviton products which are known to be of high quality and are often recommended here by some of the customer installers.
I bought the Leviton QuickPort and RJ-45 connector and it works flawlessly. What does building a roof have to do with audio/video wall plates? DUMB!

So we have an idiot that thinks just because they are sold at Home Depot and he/she apparently has something against HD, that it isn't good advice to tell someone to go there to buy them locally. I suppose it would be ok to buy them directly over the web from Leviton or PartsExpress or wherever but not from Home Depot. Yeah, and you shouldn't buy Levis jeans from Target when you can buy the exact same pair at JcPenny for $10 more.

The feedback ratings are worthless. If we are going to keep them, they should not be anonymous. I am sure that whoever left the feedback above knows little to nothing about audio and just felt like ranting about their feelings about Home Depot.

Thanks for the pointer, I don't see the section, probably because I don't have any feedback.

Pretty funny story regarding Home Depot. I use Home Depot all the time for computer network stuff for work, it's closer and quicker than Fry's for things like cat5e cable, jacks, wallplates, etc. People at work give me grief as well, but I look at them and ask them if they would pay twice as much for a can of beans at a specialty market. After they think about it, they come around :)

I agree with everyone.

I leave my name after chicklets, or hint that it was me. I have only given 1 red, and it was to a condasending post. Thats it.

The main problem is, there is non-educated people here, who think they are educated. And when others disagree, they are the ones wrong, and the reds fly.

Get rid of the whole system, everything, I don't even know why there are post counts, other then competition, which isn't always a good idea in a forum, full of alpha-males. Maybe to show how new they are, but privateer has like 499 posts, and look at that guy:rolleyes:

It's in the webmasters hands, whether they will head are calls is uncertain.

I agree 100%!!
The steam vent should be off limits to chicklets of any color. The steam vent is where we come to say things we wouldn't (or shouldn't) say anywhere else on this forum. If nothing else maybe it would possibly prevent flaming in the other areas.

And by the way... What the heck does a blueish..greyish..chicklet thing mean anyway? Is that good or bad? I've recieved two of them so far. No points related to them so I'm unclear of their purpose.

MDS

I think the bluish gray chicklets are 'neutral'. In other words, the person wanted to say something negative or irrelevant but didn't go all the way and choose a red.

But how is that possible? When you go to give somebody a (always green in my case) chicklet, you can only choose positive or negative; there's nothing in-between.

I have only given one and that was for language totally unbefitting any family site. I can't understand how it got past the moderators. No need for that to express your opinion. I hear enough of it on my job. There was one superintendant that I promise you, if he could not use profanity, he would only speak about 15 words. He didn't know (or at least use) anymore. I pray for him, too.

the grey chicklet is from someone with a Red main chicklet. They can't give you a psoitive, or negative point. I had one from someone, but they were red, so no greeny.

If you don't mind me asking...

Not at all. I have posted a combination of my own words (normal text) and excerpts stolen from another site because I'm too lazy to write it all myself (italics).

What is [a Tartans]...significance?

"Originally, the Scottish Tartan was a distinction of rank or position. It was not identified by weave but by the number of colours in the weave. If only one colour was used it depicted a servant, two, a farmer rank, three, an officer rank, five, a chieftain, six for a poet, and seven for a Chief.

Eventually, clans or families adopted their own tartan, using a range of animal and earth colours which were frequently secret, only known to the weavers of the islands. They included yellows, blues, whites, greens, browns, reds, black and purple."

...how is [a Tartan]...selected?

Hmm, well, this can be either easy or complicated, and is somewhat of a cloudy issue.

If your Surname is the same as one of the Clan names, then it is easy; you are entitled to wear that Clan's Tartan (traditionally, it is considered extremely bad form to wear a Tartan you are not entitled to wear). Otherwise, you should look back through your lineage and select the most recent Clan name. The latter method is how I determined what I was entitled to wear.

For example, my Surname is Buckle. Buckle is not a Clan name (there are many Scottish names which were not large enough to become Clan names). However, the nearest Clan on my mothers side of the family is MacDonald (her maiden name), whilst on my fathers, it is MacEwan (my fathers mothers maiden name), therefore, I am entitled to wear either the MacDonald or MacEwan Tartans.

Note that I said Tartans; plural. Most Tartans are available in two variations; Modern and Ancient. This has nothing to do with the physical age of the piece of material and is indicative only of the 'style'. The colours of Ancient (the original Clan colours) Tartans are usually lighter in colour than Modern. Note that only the hue of the colours change when considering Ancient or Modern Tartans; colours do not change from blue to red etc, and the pattern stays exactly the same.

Depending on its size, a Clan may also have more than one Tartan. In this case, each Tartan's pattern will be different (and often its colours too). For example, MacDonald happened to be one of the biggest Clans. There's the MacDonald of Clanranald Tartan, MacDonald of Staffa, MacDonald of Sleat, MacDonald of Lochmaddy and others as well. The latter portions of these titles are all places in Scotland, so the Tartan title tells you where those particular MacDonalds were from (understandably, a large Clan would be spread all over the place). My own is from the Isles, or Skye in particular.

Just to complicate things even more, remember that some Clans, due to their size, had other Clans as vassals. These vassals gave their allegiance to the chief Clan in the understanding that they would be under their protection. To give you some appreciation of Clan MacDonalds size, these are the Clans which were its vassals:

"Beath, Beaton, Bethune, Bowie, Colson, Connall, Connell, Darroch, Donald, Donaldson, Donillson, Donnelson, Drain, Galbraith, Gilbride, Gorrie, Gowan, Gowrie, Hawthorn, Hewison, Houstoun, Howison, Hughson, Hutcheonson, Hutchinson, Hutchison, Isles, Kellie, Kelly, Kinnell, Mac a' Challies, MacBeth, MacBeath, MacBheath, MacBride, MacCaishe, MacCall, MacCash, MacCeallaich, MacCodrum, MacColl, MacConnell, MacCook, MacCooish, MacCrain, MacCuag, MacCuish, MacCuitein, MacCutcheon, MacDaniell, Macdrain, MacEachern, MacElfrish, MacElheran, MacGorrie, MacGorry, MacGoun, MacGowan, MacGown, MacHugh, MacHutchen, MacHutcheon, MacIan, Macilreach, Macilriach, Macilleriach, Macilrevie, Macilvride, Macilwraith, MacKean, MacKellachie, MacKellaig, MacKelloch, MacKiggan, MacKinnell, MacLairish, MacLardie, MacLardy, MacLarty, MacLaverty, MacLeverty, MacMurchie, MacMurdo, MacMurdoch, MacO'Shannaig, MacQuistan, MacQuisten, MacRaith, MacRorie, MacRory, MacRuer, MacRurie, MacShannachan, MacSorley, MacSporran,
MacSwan, MacWhannell, Martin, May, Murchie, Murchison, Murdoch, Murdoson, O'Drain, O'May,
O'Shannachan, O'Shaig, O'Shannaig, Purcell, Revie, Reoch, Riach, Rorison, Shannon, Sorley, Sporran, Train, Whannel. Clan MacDonald of Clanranald: Allan, Allanson, Currie, MacAllan, MacBurie, MacEachin, MacGeachie, MacGeachin, MacIssac, MacKeachan,Mackechnie, MacKeochan, MacKessock, MacKichan, MacKissock, MacMurrich, MacVarish, MacVurrich, MacVurie. Clan MacDonald of Ardnamurchan: Johnson, Kean, Keene. Clan MacDonald of Glencoe: Henderson, Johnson, Kean, Keene, MacHenry, MacIan, MacKean."

Lots eh?! ;) As far as I am aware, any of the above Clans, due to their allegiance, would be entitled to wear MacDonald, though no doubt they would virtually always wear their own; it is literally one's identity after all.

After all of that, you may still be wondering why I chose MacDonald as opposed to MacEwan. Preference, nothing more. My father wears MacEwan because he prefers it to MacDonald, and because it is more directly in his own family line. I looked at both at the time I was getting my own kilt, and liked MacDonald better.

Today, there is an increasingly 'grey area' as to what may be worn. The younger generation tends to think "anything goes" and that one should wear whatever Tartan they like, simply because they prefer one style over another. Personally, I am very much against this. But then, I am a very traditional person.

I feel that all feedback, whether positive or negative should be automatically signed. It would stop a lot of the BS remarks left on feedback. I try to make it a point to give a positive feedback to anybody who claims they were wrongfully "red chickletted". I figure they should break even that way.

It's just childish. Either force identity or do away with the system. If you don't want somebody to know what you said, you shouldn't say it.

Well I've never given anyone a red one, nor will I ever. If you don't like something someone says then confront them in the thread, or by PM. Of course I've gotten red ones for that too. I think it's BS. The system is flawed, we all know it's flawed so in reality as long as everyone acknowledges that, the system is fine.:confused: Well as long as the street is foggy, the hill is has a turn to the right, and the barn has a goat in it. I'm one of those who gets mad if people don't sign their rep....if I catach anyone giving me red without signing on it, I do give back red in retaliation.

On another board, my red rep is hard enough to trigger a temp ban (they use a script that temp bans once you lose so much rep in a day, and permabans once you hit a certain low total rep number)...so that's a pretty nice "sign your rep, prick!".

On that note, I do try my best to sign all of my rep, unless I'm just spreading greens just so I can rep someone again who really deserves another.

heh, I just got my first "grey" chiclet.

turns out the guy who tried to green me was either in the red, or was too new to have their rep count.

That's the one good feature of the rep system...you can't create an army of alternate accts and swarm reds upon someone you don't like....well, only if you spend lots of time working them up...but at one point per rep, at least at this point in time...it's not like it's going to be worth the trouble.

Was his rep red when he gave it, or was his postcount under whatever the default number to pass is? Often those who play by the "don't open your mouth unless you have something to say" rule have very few posts, thus often take months or years to exceed the post limit.

The final thing was he might have posted rep, but something happened to the post (deletion, locked thread, moved to a mod's only club, etc) that would grey it out.

I have no clue what default is for Vbull, since I never started a forum up before....so the magic post number for rep to count can be 10, 100, 1000, 666, whatever the default is or what the mods set it to really.

These systems are far from perfect....it will all make sense as time goes by.

I have no idea...it seems every board uses different names for each square of rep.

One board says "sucks less than most", and another says "is a glorious beacon of light" Pretty much it's up to the forum admin on setting those.

That's the thing to keep in mind...every vbulletin board of the same version works similarly in concept, but like different sports cars, the software is tweaked and tuned differently.

I received 4 reds the other day. Out of the four, two were signed and those I could live with, but the other two just plain childish IMO. Therefore I decide to change my sig and I've rather enjoyed it and only have Chris to thank. :D

What would happen if you got 3 like minded people that were always posting around each other and thanking the piss out of each other and practically killing themselves patting each other on the back because they were so freakin' in love with each other?

My favorite red rep experience involved being falsely accused of giving somebody red rep. I was then compelled to actually give them red rep to prove that I didn't give them red rep in the first place. For as much as people say that they don't care, they sure cry when they get it. I know I don't like knowing that somebody out there flat out doesn't like me.

Another thing I have noticed is that there is like a core group of guys here who don't mess around with anything other than A/V. I admire that. It's not for me but I admire it in them. Then there's the funsters ... :D

Getting negative rep isn't fun whether it's signed or not, but I agree that it's more aggravating when you don't know why you got it (which is more likely the case if you don't know who gave it to you). I'd sign mine, but I can understand why someone wouldn't. Someone might be upset by a post or think that someone is giving bad information, but they might also be afraid of retaliation. I can see this especially for relatively new members who tend to have less reputation points and are more affected by negative points. There are a number of people here who could take away quite a few points with a red chicklet. Someone should be able to give out negative rep without fear of getting it in return simply as a tit-for-tat thing. Sure, the ramification is that some people do it for fun to get others upset, but that's the price to pay for others to have that freedom.

I don't give out negative rep to anyone but spammers (who are soon to be banned anyway and aren't really affected by it). I've thought about it two or three times, but I tend to just post my thoughts instead. If I could give out/take away a percentage of my normal amount, I might consider it...maybe. I can't justify smacking someone with 150+ negative points because they upset me, though. That, and I very (very) rarely ever get upset here. It's a great group of people, IMO.

Seth=L

I had that problem trying to network mod the WDTV. It worked but not good at all. Too many quirks and terrible with NTFS mounts.

For the eGreat, I've been able to stream BD rips with DTS-HD MA, 50GB files, and I don't get any stutter at all. I'm shocked, since network connectivity is limited to 100Mbps on it.

I don't use any attached storage, I only stream over network. Maybe I'd see a performance hit using eSATA or USB. That would point to a driver issue in Linux with NTFS drives. Highly possible.

Glad you have one too, greatest toy I ever bought. :D

Rule # 3.
No trolling, spamming or
flooding the board with post after post
just to annoy people or rack up your post count.

This isn't while your back is turn off and you ain't got me.

Oh sure; the constant posts in this thread, along with the carpet bombing of every other thread on the site will become a bit annoying at times; akin to water torture, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I don't want to pollute your thread but let me tell ya, this is a complaint.
Post what ever you want and however much you want in your own thread.
Being oblivious to feedback is bad enough but spoiling the entire forum in this manner shows a complete lack of consideration. Stop posting for Nomo.

I don't think 15 posts a day isn't all that bad(I hope not what's a bored Aher supposed to do.:(), but it's the constant arguments you get in over stuff you full well knows our views on. I've seen you argue with Seth=L, Peng and even Wmax in the last 2 days. I try to twist it with humor to cope, but it only helps so much. If you want to argue get in a political thread.

I do thank you for shortening of your posts. My ADD can't take the long ones.

All right, I hear you all, I'll make an effort to diminish my post count.

* I'm sorry about this, but it's just that I try my best not only at helping people,
but also at trying to get alone with everyone.

It is not my intention to be annoying, but I do respect all your comments.

After all, I'm only human, and I am sensitive too, to what you're all saying
towards me.

** By the way, are you only seeing my name, or are you taking the time to read
with objectivity my posts?
*** And I never attacked anyone for posting their toughts in any which way they desire.
I have too much respect for freedom of speech.
'Is too much of a good thing that bad?'

I really love this site, and I love helping people to the best of my knowledge.
I also learned invaluable stuff from others, cause I take the time to read and explore too.
I spend as much time reading and learning as I post, if not much more. And I love to share with others what I learn and what I read.

Here's today example:
* http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/floorstanding/emp-tek-impression-e5tir

))) Now, that is a great deal!

~~~ I listened to your comments, and I'll do my best to appease your concerns.
I'll try hard to stick at what truly counts, plus I do understand that sometimes Less is More.
Sincerely,
Bob
I feel the same way sometimes... :)
* Now, my moniker, that is my choice, and I wish you respect it.
I love these films by Peter Jackson, and it is not a ripoff, like you're saying.
If you do feel that way, it's your own choice... ;)
Does JBL 4565 mean anything to you?:)
Well, it was only 33 posts in like a 9 hour period in the evening. That's him holding back. In a 6 hour period before that from midnight to 6:00 AM he jammed in 55 posts.
+1, and it's not something that can be remedied by putting him on the ignore list.
I vote for a 5 post per day limit placed on LOTR. And before he might complain about that, I'm pretty sure that number is significantly higher than my own average, and hey I'm a Ninja. Of course, I'd be perfectly fine with a 3 post limit, or even zero post limit.
I don't know that he'll be back. I think Dave did a fine job banning him. Maybe Bob thought all the feedback could be laughed off but this was a pretty public banning with several members and mods supporting this whole heartedly. It wasn't like an isolated case of him having a few too many and going off about what Tom Andry did in college that one time. :eek: :D
In response to the thread title I think we should make feedback in The Steam Vent count for double and if you like get a certain number of red chicklets in a week you get put on a weeks worth of probation where Clint has too approve each of your posts after he has been alerted to you having made one via one of those restaurant type beepers. :D
The guy "Bob" (I have no doubt that was not his real name) was just TOO MUCH. I do think the guy will figure out a way back in here some how though. I hope not, but it seems highly probable. The most irritating part for me was seeing that moniker of his every where. It really disturbed me.
He's probably a bored teenager. I know when I was a teen I terrorized chat rooms just for the fun of making people mad. I just hope he finds an online game. Mine was Everquest. It gave me enough to do to not be a royal PITA to mods Internet wide. Though I was still one to my parents.
I apologize for having to debrief in this forum, but this was the hardest week of my year and to have this guy come in and add to it was just too much. I debated leaving the forum because of his flooding. Alex even was getting pissed. Can his posts be deleted? I'd really prefer it. I don't want to see his name anymore.
