A friend and I have been in the market for a new sub. I've been telling him about the SVS and HSU subs. He was impressed but said he'd build one for under $200. He's worked for NASA as a ME and currently does independent consulting on laser projects for the military. Anyhow, he said he would "engineer" a passive home sub over the weekend powered by his Proton 1200 mono amp. The box size is 44" X 17" X 28". He's running a $100 MTX 4Ohm sub for now. The guy is insane. He says it shakes his floor (it's concrete-he lives in New Mexico) and rattles everything in his house. The range is 17Hz at +3 db to 90Hz -3 db. Check out the photos...

I agree. There's alot more to it than just putting a powerful woofer into a large box. If it's for only home theater you may be ok(maybe not) but there's alot of music in movies and this is when accuracy counts. All drivers have parameters that they are designed for to work as they were designed to. You can go to the partsexpress or madisound forum for quality help. There's also specs for the drivers on the websites.

He's using a 10" powered Yamaha sub for the tight stuff. This is merely for the "wow" effect.

He might be a ME, but apparently he did not research the acoustical co-efficients of dampening materials. What does he think that 1" of open cell foam is doing within the bandwidth used? :D

That has got to be the lowest WAF sub I've ever seen! The CAF looks pretty high though!

I built that sub!

This sub was built for one reason, and one reason only, that is to enhance the effect of movies. It is tuned to the subsonic region of the audio spectrum. The greatest output is at 17Hz (+3db); the crossover cuts off sharply at 31Hz (about 32db/oct). This box was created with all of the driver parameters in mind. The open Cell foam was lying around the office and is good enough, and if it does resonate who cares! It’s just to make spaceships rumble by as I watch movies. A subwoofer is supposed to be just that a SUB-woofer. Criticize if you like, but it performs flawlessly as designed. When I listen to music, I listen to it as it should be heard, on my XR-16’s in pure 2ch stereo mode.
