is it possible to turn off the sound fields on a 5490 (or any yahama). I can't stand when Rock Concert and TV Sports come up.

When I put in a movie, I don't want to monkey around with 70mm Spectacular

I just want the normal Dolby or DTS feed...

Yes, just use the normal, or surround decode mode.

that's what i ultimately do, but it always seems to pick one of the soundfields whenever I put in a new DVD, or change the channels on my cable.

i have to keep manually adjusting it. its a pita

I think there is a setting to let you keep it on whatever setting it had last, but I forget. Just read the manual carefully and see what it says, or you could always contact yamaha and see what they have to say.

I use direct for music and tv and Dolby surround decoder for movies, on my Yamaha. On the Denon I use stereo for music and Dolby 5.1 surround decoder.

I generally don't use the proprietary Yamaha sound fields. they seem to be more a novelty than anything else. Adventure is probably the least artificial sounding of the bunch, but I generally just use PLIIx music for everything.

In the setup menu, go through all of the sound/surround settings. You'll find some that have two options: auto and last. Select last.

I use "straight" or "pure direct" for music and just basic surround for SD movies and PCM Surr. Decoder for BD.

Yes, standard is just regular DTS or Dolby Digital, and it's what I also use, I don't care for the Cinema DSP's as they add too much reverb and other undesired effects.
