Yamaha RX-Z11 First Look

Does anyone know if the new Yamaha receivers will allow the OSD information such as volume and input to be displayed when using all HDMI connections. Right now on my RX-V2600 you can only see OSD information if the source is using an analog input (component, etc). You cannot see any OSD items if the source is hooked up via HDMI.

I cannot wait until the new line is available. very promising. :)

Can Power amplifer stage be turned off in other Yamaha/Denon Models?

Yamaha has finally announced its new flagship receiver. The RX-Z11 is a 11.2 powerhouse that breaks all of boundaries of former Yamaha receivers and steps up to present more advanced features than anything else they have delivered to date. First off is the new 11.2 moniker - how can you have 11.2 in a home theater system? With a lot of DSP...

I wanted to use a receiver as an preamplifier by turning the power amplifier off. It seems the new RX-Z11 has this feature. Unfortunately I cannot afford this model . Do other yamaha/denon models also have this feature ?

Thanks

Any receiver with pre-outs can be used as a pre-amp. But you don't really need to turn anything off. The pre-outs just bypass the amp section.

Many mid-level receivers have them these days.

Thanks for the quick response gmichael. Let me extend my question. Today receiver is considered a compromise compared to separates because preamp and amp stages co exist in a receiver. The preamp stage ( low voltage) is said to be affected by amplifier stage ( high voltage). In the configuration that you mention, the amplifer is still "on" , so in theory it can still interfere in performance overall. The yamaha RX Z11 has a feature that can turn the amp section off so that it does not interfere with preamp section. So my question was if this feature of turning off the amp was available in lower end yamahas/denons etc.

That's a new feature to me.

To my knowledge this is the first Yamaha to have this feature. I'm not sure about other companies, but it's the first I've even heard of this.
It's ashame it costs 5 to 6K to get it.

The amplifier designers and EEs can kindly correct me on this as I am not, but, I think the amplifiers could only be 'on' if the amplifier circuit is completed; i.e. speakers connected... maybe.

I suggested this feature 2 years ago on the HT Cruise when I met with them while eating some sushi and it looks like somebody listened :D

Thats NOT true. The amp is still dissipating power even with no load attached. Put your hand on top of the RX-z9 with no speakers attached after being left on for an hour or so and you will see just how much power these mega receivers burn in idle.

The EE's have spoken. :D Thanks for the correction Gene. :)

Now, if only I had a Z9 to try that on... :(

Well, just do a small scale test with what you have, a current meter in series in the power cable circuit with speakers disconnected. Then, just upscale that power to the big babies.:D

Besides, I'd be curious to see the numbers. Like letting the computer run all day. It is only 150 watts/hr. But, there are 24 in a day and 30 of them in a billing cycle:D

The amp stage is not really high voltage. The rails are at around 30+ volts and is sufficiently far enough. Check the amps specs. That will tell you how good or bad it is.

Do you know if it has a digital RF AC-3 input for LDs?

Most likely it doesn't. They are kind of obsolete. You will need to buy a converter.

Thank you folks for trying to help. I also tried to zooming the picture and I didn't find the AC-3 RF input...

I just bought the LD RF converter!! Now I just need to buy the RX-Z11!!

troytn, I think the best matching DVD player for the RX-Z11 is the Playstation3 as it can pass everything thru HDMI, including SACD new Dolby and DTS formats!!! And it also plays Blu-Ray!!!

I'm leaning towards the Oppo 980H since I have several dvd audio cd's and SACD's. This unit should send all high rez music via HDMI to the Z11. Plus its cheap which will allow me to buy a HD dvd player or Blue Ray player. I just need to sell my Yamaha Z9 this fall which I love.

I'm anxious to see what the internet price will be for the Z11.

Why are Blue ray players so expensive? It would be better for anyone wanting to get in the Blue ray camp and buy a PS3 over a stand alone player. It seems strange one can buy a PS3 that plays games, SACD's etc over a stand alone Blue Ray player that only plays Blue Rays.
