Yamaha RX-V765 Remappable inputs

The only remaining big problem I see with the x65 series is the fixed component/optical and component/coax input. And the apparent reduction in power over last years models (but the 665 does seem to get reasonably loud.)

Was it THAT expensive to include both optical/coax on AV1/AV2?

After all, they went from discrete to chip amps, remove S-Video, removed assignable inputs, and used a four input HDMI receiver chip, so their part count went down.

I really feel like they went to far to save costs while removing the friendly Yamaha flexibilty I was used to. Ever since I bought my first Yamaha AVR, the RX-V795a, they gradually improved in features and general bang for the buck. Then from the 659 to 661 they dropped some power to add HDMI, which was ok I guess. The 663 was about the same as the 661 but added the lossless decoding.

The 665 almost certainly dropped power (see the power consumption and compare weights,) and removed input options and flexibility. Sure they added two HDMI inputs - they use a chip that handles four inputs. I can't imagine the cost of that required them to put in a cheaper power transformer, switch to chip amps, remove S-Video inputs, and remove assignability.

Not to mention I am not in love with the new look, but that's a matter of taste :)

Yep, and Yamaha is not the only one to do this.

^ Very true Michael, and Pioneer is also following suite.

And anyway, the best deals right now are the older receivers of a couple years ago, like Marantz (SR8001, 7001, 6001, 5002), Onkyo (TX-NR906, SR876, NR905, SR875, SR805), some Pioneer Elite models (recent ones too, SC-05 and SC-07), some older Yamaha receivers (Z9), and some older Denons.

For entry to mid levels, I will stick with Marantz, Onkyo and Denon.

That's how I perceived things.

Well, of course he can use the Video Components of AV2 with Audio2 for the analog sound. If not, that will not make any sense at all!
That's how they related to each other (the Yamaha way), so his PS2 is secure now.

No assignable Inputs! This is outrageous! What the heck is happening with Yamaha???

I'd better go and look for an old vintage Fisher receiver from the 60's!
Yamaha just released a firmware update, and thanks to Will S for looking into this for me!

I have the Wii and was forced to use AV5 (composite video)...yuk!

With this firmware update, you can now assign inputs.. The audio 1 and 2 can now be used with the component inputs!

Be sure to read the Addendum

will yamaha firmware update fix my problem?

Hello:
I have been reading this post with much interest because I also bought a Yamaha rxv 765 and I have been having strange problems with my Time/warner cable box. There are some times when suddenly the sound clips in and out and at other times, the picture goes ghastly white with no color in it at all. This is always solved by rebooting the cable box. I have not had time to turn in time warner's scientific atlantic cable box but right now I am wondering if that would be necessary. The problem will probably resurface with a new time warner cable box but I am wondering if this new firmware update would address this problem. Does anybody have any ideas or familiarity with this problem?

Response from above ^

Do check at Yamaha web site, there is indeed some firmware update disponible for your model, not sure though if that will fix your problem, but it just might.

yamaha 765 new firmware question continued

Ok
I have burned the CD for the firmware update for my Yamaha RXV 765 from the yamaha website. Now, I would like to ask firstrival exactly how he loaded it into his Yammy 765 using his PS-2. I am a little confused with how this is done and I would appreciate some help in doing this. I think this will solve my problem with my time warner cable box. Some times when I turn on my system, it is perfect and other times, the sound clips in and out and some times there is no color. According to the Yamaha website this firmware will "improve the video input assignability to the analog audio input and stability for the HDMI connection with other CE products." This sounds like exactly what I need, but I need some help in setting this up with the PS2. Thank YOu.

FIRSTRIVAL, we need your help! Well, Ray does.

Is there any instructions on how to update your Yamaha receiver from the disc, on the Yamaha web site?
I figure that any type of CD or DVD player will do.

And it should say which type of connection (perhaps Optical or Coaxial) to use, and which input from the back of your Yamaha to use. Should be quite simple. No?

Yamaha firmware update question continued

Hi:
Well, probably quite simple for everyone else, but I am a newby. I am confused by what Fenix says:
I can also confirm that it works. The only thing is that when you use it you select your input as one of the audio inputs. After you setup that input to it's corresponding video input, then you just switch to the audio input (instead of the video input) to use it.

But I'm not complaining, IT WORKS!!!

(It just seems a little odd to me to have to select the audio input instead of the video input when you want to use it)
So, I would connect the PS2 to the Aud 1 or 2 but what does Fenix mean when he says "after you setup that input to it's corresponding video input, then you swith to the audio input instead of the video input to use it?

Sorry, I am confused.

Thank YOu

Thanks. I just tried this and it was exactly what I needed!

I burned the track on a CD-R using Nero (16x, Track-at-Once, Finalize).

First, I tried it with my Xbox 360. I got "Model Type Err" after a few seconds.

Next, I tried it with my PS3. The message on the screen stayed at "Header Found" for several minutes before I stopped it.

Finally, I tried it using the PS2. It worked immediately. The whole process took less than 5 minutes.

And most importantly, it works!
Yes, AV2 and AUDIO2 works together now.

Well Ray, you were first referring to Firstrival, and now you're with Fenix!

Yep, I'm confused too.

Anyway, what you really need is the clear instructions. And I'm having a hard time to figure why you cannot find it in the Yamaha web site?
Do you really need me to look for you???

You said "I'm a newbee". Me, I know NOTHING about this firmware, and I know NOTHING either how to burn it into a disc, and then how to transfer it to your receiver.
But I'll bet you anything that if I put just a few minutes into it, I will find out exactly how to do it. But I feel so stupid to do that, when you can do it yourself. How old are you? 5? 7?
This is the first time in my life that I use a computer for the last 8 months or so. I type with only one finger too. Honest to you.
I know ZIP about copy and pasting and tons of other things.
And those two buddies we're talking about, are not very explicit in their instructions, are they?
Seems to me, that a lot of people here needs a coach to tell them exactly what to do.
Wait a sec., I'll look for you on Yamaha web site, and I will give you the receipe...

And I'm back, total time = less than 2 minutes!

Here: -> http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=5028422&CTID=5000300&RLTID=1505&DETYP=RELATION

When you're there, look for your model # RX-V765 -> "Firmware update version JO30 released may 2009. (USA model)."

When you're at that new place, sign in under EASYPASS SIGN IN.

Now, you're already downloaded and burn the disc with that firmware.
Next, read the instructions on how to proceed with the transfer of that disc to your receiver.
* And don't forget to set your PS2 to the right audio setting from the audio out menu setup in your PS2.

You really helped me when you said, "don't forget to set your PS2 to the right audio setting from the audio out set up in your PS2. That is the missing piece of the puzzle. I have never used my daughter's PS2 so I did not know that. I am a Registered Pharmacist trying to figure this all out before I go home to try it. I am posting on this website during my breaks and lunch at work. I am an expert in drugs and pharmaceutics not in A/V such as yourself. All day at work, people ask me stupid questions but I try to help them, not put them down. Your tirade aside, you really helped me. Thanks!

Well Ray, I am a total illiterate as far as the computer world is concern, same as the Sony PS2 or PS3.
But in the last 8 months of my life, that I now own a computer, and before I purchase my first blu-Ray player, I did some research into which one was the best. At one point, I was highly contemplating to go with the PS3, 80gb with direct DSD bitstream for my SACDs and blu-ray discs; but the wind shifted towards the sammy BD-UP5000, because of my extensive HD DVD collection (over 250 titles). Plus the Sammy at that time was $100 cheaper, and was a better DVD player too with it's HQV Reon VX-50 video chip.

And I did learn a few things since then.
As you did notice on my last post, the last phrase just before the asterik *,
was the magic key to unlock the final solution, and I was very much so, convinced that it was the true revelation that should direct you on the right path of the decisive "absublution" (meaning: process).

See, that's the thing with Sony PS2 and PS3 game consoles, they are full of video and audio setup adjustments from their x-bar menu setups.
And if you don't know where to set them up, you're totally screw!

So, now, I'm really glad that you learn a valuable lesson about the mysteries of Sony game consoles.

By the way, my Mom, many years ago was an assistant Pharmacist, so I had the chance to experiment with many drugs. But the most potent one is still "Audio".

Nice meeting you Ray, and best regards,

Bob

Ray,

Did you get this figured out? This thread says there are 4 pages, yet I keep getting redirected to the 3rd page when I click on the 4th, so I can't tell what else has happened.

*edit

Ok, now I see that there are no other posts. According to the instructions from Yamaha (which I think that you may have read by now) you must use a player with either a coax or optical output. Me I happen to have a portable CD player that I bought while I was in Hong Kong that has an optical output, so I just hooked it up to the same input that my TV was connected to (since I was using an optical cable with my TV) and started the update process on the receiver.

That explains a lot

Thanks Fenix and Bob:
Yes Fenix, I read the Yamaha website and it seemed real straight forward until I read your posts and you said: " after you setup that input to its corresponding video input, then you switch to the audio instead of the video input to use it". That confused me because I am not familiar with all of this. I do not possess all the esoteric knowledge about audio/video that you guys have. Nor can I get it. I just want to run a firmware update. I was a audioholic back in the 70s (I still have the Bose 901s, but I gave away the JBL L-100s, and the Nakamichi) before I went to grad school and before I got married but none of this current technology existed. Recently, I bought a Sony XBR7 52 and decided to add a Klipsch surround sound system. That is when I started reading the posts, trying to get back into the swing of things but it is tough. I am not a gamer so I am not familiar with the workings of the PS2 and PS3 that my daughters have. I appreciate everyone's help. Sorry if I am ignorant about some of these things.

And Bob, Everyone is ignorant about something, (we can't possibly know everything), but does not mean that someone is "screwed up" because they don't know something. I could say the whole world is screwed up because they don't know pediatric dosing from a hole in the wall, but I don't. Hopefully, your anger with me is ephemeral.

My good buddy Ray ^

Ray, are you kidding? You don't know me. Anger? Me? Never.

I never been into a fight or an argument in my entire life.

Seriously, not here, not with you, not with anyone at Audioholics, true, honest truth.
My language might appears like it at times, but that's it, it's only my style, my sense of humor. When you get to know me, I'm the coolest guy on the internet.

I really appreciate your input on the post just above, you and I came from the same generation, for sure.

And about the word "screw up". Georges Bush was scew up and still is.
On the opposite side, Obama is the coolest president in a long while.
Some parts of the world are run by screw up people big time.
But you and I, we are screw up small time, because we don't keep up with the new stuff that our kids are growing up with. That's just normal, we're from another gen.
So, you see, I used the word in the appropriate context. In our cases, it's perfectly normal and positive, cause we are not as screw up as the kids now. ;)
Anyway Ray, look in your dictionary, it is not even a word! ;)
So, who knows what that really means.

And the main thing now, is that you're not "screw up" anymore. :)
And me, on the contrary, I am, because I still don't know yet how to copy and paste from my computer.
Heck, I don't even know how to transfer pictures and all that enchilada...
I would love to send you guys pictures of my systems, but I don't know how.
So, just take my word for it, it looks and sounds very cool to me, and that's all it counts.
I did a lot of good things in my life, but what's even more important, is what I'm doing with it right now.

So Ray, anytime you have a question, ask us, and we'll unscrew you up. ;) :)

Best regards,

Bob

Ray,

When I had said that it was simply after the update was complete. In order to then select one of the analog audio inputs to be paired with a certain video input, you must switch the receiver to one of the audio inputs, then hit OPTION on your remote. From there you select the "Video Out" option and select the video input that you have connected your source to that is using that analog audio input. Once you select it and exit out of the option menu, all you have to do is switch your receiver to that particular audio input and it will know to get the video from the input that you had selected. However, if you switch your receiver to the video input then you will have no sound.

I hope that makes sense.

As far as setting up a PS2 or PS3, I do not know as I have never owned one. I'm sure if you went to sony's website you should be able to download the owner's manual and read how to change them. The other option would be to run google searches.

If you need anything, else please let us know. :)

BTW, I consider myself to be quite the audio n00b. I'm still learning a lot of stuff myself. Personally I enjoy learning about everything and doing a lot of my own work. I repair my own cars (replaced my own transmission and one day will replace my engine), build my computers, do my own upgrades on my condo (my wife and I laid our tile floor downstairs, it was a painful week, and much more), etc. I enjoy this hands on stuff, I just go to google and try to learn as much as I can. Then I will go to people, usually friends, that know how to do the stuff and learn from them.

I'm Back....................

Sorry guys,
I just came off of a tough week (I worked 64 hours last week) so I haven't had time to be in the loop. I did the firmware update and your help and hints came in handy. I used firstrival's hint about the PS2 and Bob's and Fenix's hints on the actual running of the firmware. IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! Now I am in nirvanaland.
Here is my setup:
Sony XBR7 52" LCD TV
Floorstanders Klipsch RF62 as the mains
Center Klipsch RC52
Surrounds Klipsch RS42
Subwoofer Klipsch RW10d.
PS3 as
It may not be Rotel, or NAD but it rocks!
Thanks, guys
I appreciate all of you.
Sorry, Bob. I thought I pissed you off and I did not know why, but I have been reading your new posts and I am getting to know you better. If you don't mind, I will take my time before I chime in on your new thread about the new receivers with HDMI and EQ. Personally, I like them but I will let you guys have your say. I am a tadpole in with the big fish.

Sincerely,
Ray
