I have to thank EVERYONE who chimed in - you all really helped me make the decision and gave me excellent pointers about both the unit and the deal!



Next order of business... Get a DVD-Audio/SACD-capable player and sell my Onkyo CS-V720 mini system that's gotten me this far.

You are correct in regard to its lack of ability to pass 1080p, however I do believe you may be incorrect regarding the receiver's ability to process 7.1 LPCM. The receiver has HDMI 1.1 repeating architecture meaning it should. I know it does at least 5.1 LPCM as well as legacy Dolby and DTS formats over HDMI.

If the 2600 acts the same as the 1600 I'm positive it won't accept 7.1 PCM, but it will do 5.1 PCM + PLIIx, I verified this firsthand with my PS3 and my RX-V1600, and confirmed it with Yamaha.


But for $200, that is a downright steal, you should almost feel bad for taking it off his hand so cheap! Enjoy it, it's a very nice piece of gear.

The RX-V2600 has top quality pre-amp section. It is superior to the models in the line before and after it; it was released as an introduction to a new series/era and as such, was designed and built to unusual performance standards.

As a multi-channel pre-pro, it is a superb device.

It also looks at home as a pre-amp in a high quality system. Unlike most recievers, this has very few visible controls on the front. Mostly blank/clean. It uses a nicely finished solid metal front, which drives home the quality feel/look.

I bought one a couple of years back for use in my dedicated 2 channel system as a pre-amp.

I'm not at all surprised of your initial results / impressions. A few years back, I was able to demo 3 receivers all pushing the same pair of speakers. The receivers were all level set and were running in pure direct / direct mode to ensure any processing was not invoked.

The receivers were as follows: Yamaha RX-V6##, Denon AVR-280# and a Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX. My back was towards the receivers so I couldn't determine which one was being selected. Yet, I could hear the distinction between each of them as music was being played.

I rated them as follows in terms of most musically pleasing: 1) Yamaha, 2) Denon and 3) Pioneer Elite. Actually, I felt a bit bummed after learning the results of my selection as I had the Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX on order and would be receiving it in a week or so. The Yamaha tested had an MSRP of about 1/2 that of the Pioneer Elite, too. Needless to say, I accepted my receipt of the Pioneer Elite, but sold it after about 6 months.

Last fall, I stumbled on a deal for a minty Pioneer Elite VSX-45TX, which I purchased. Apparently, my memory didn't bring up the listening scenario that I had a few years earlier. I'm actually fine with the Pioneer Elite ... as long as I don't get involved with any A/B testing of it.

Fortunately, FedEx tracking has my RX-V1600 arriving tomorrow as well as my 2nd Parasound amplifier. It should be a sweet, sweet day.

This has be a good post to read. I have the RX-V1600 that has been in a closet since Black Friday when I upgraded to the Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH. I like the receiver alot and the primary reason for the upgrade was to get 1080p audio and video to pass through HDMI and add a couple more HDMI's overall. Plus VSX-21TXH was $200 off.

I've been debating selling the RX-V1600 but I'm now convinced to keep it. It looks great has a solid amp section (for me at least).

Not to highjack the post, but any recommendations for decent floor standers to create 2.0 system for the bedroom? Budget is about $300. In a 2-3 years I will upgrade to a 5.1 for the bedroom and give the to be purchased floor standers to my son.

If you could double your budget, I'd say look for a used pair of Monitor Audio RS6s. There's a lot of them out there in real lovely rosenut veneer. The sound is most amazing with these speakers, and at $600, they are about 1/2 the cost of the original price when new.

I just recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V2600 ($450.00). It's theoretically refurbished from Yamaha. It works superbly. I'm using it in my computer- extra bedroom.
I'm running it bi amped to a pair of Infinity Beta 60 speakers. It sounds very good. I've got a spare 200 watt amp in excellent condition in spare, but I find no reason to not use the Yamaha's amp!
