I'm glad that I found this website!! It has been a great help reading reviews and the posts here.

Recently I bought the Yamaha RX V2500 reciever and I have a question hopefully someone can answer for me. I have hooked up my older (lower quality) JVC DVD player to the reciever using just the video portion of the RCA cable and for the audio the optical digital input. My question is when I am listening to the radio, I seem to be able to get more sound at lower volume than when I am playing a DVD for instance. Is this because I have a cheap quality DVD player or maybe some other reason?

Anyway, thanks for reading this and entertainig my question.

This is pretty common on most Yamaha receivers. I believe there is another post here that discusses how you can adjust the input trim on individual inputs on the 2500 to level out the volume across all sources. Take a look at it.

I have the same thing though with my Z1 and it is pretty common among other receivers I have heard. Especially with tuners integrated into the receiver.

Thank you very much for the information. I'll try it out and let you know how it worked. I wish I could leave work now and go home and toy with it. I just got it last weekend. I have it hooked up to a 5.1 Def Tech system. AWESOME!!

BMXTRIX,

Just one question - Did you try this with you're Yamaha reciever? Did it make a big difference?

Thanks again,

Jeff

No, I never tried it and don't know if trim adjustment is available on the z1 - I think it is a newer feature on some Yamaha products.

Yamaha 3000 vs Yamaha 2400/2500

Yamaha 3000 vs Yamaha 2400/2500

This being said with 7.1 vs. 5.1, what is a better reciever to have, the Yamaha RX-V3000 or the Rx-v2400? I have an opportunity to pick both up at a reasonable price, but am confused with which one to go with. Am I buying old technology with the 3000 which is a few years older? I know the 2400 can do 7.1, but what dvds are out there? Also, is it possible to "fake" 7.1 through Yamahas DSP modes? I know the 3000 has front effects which I imagine has a DSP mode so I was just wondering which reciever is the one to go with, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

If I were faced with the same decision, I would choose the RX-V2400. Being a current receiver with all the latest decoding formats, it would be a better deal than the older model.

There are no discrete 6.1 or 7.1 DVDs in existence (DTS-ES 6.1 isn't fully discrete because the 6th channel is also matrixed into the side surround channels). However, PLII can convert 2 channels to 5.1. PLIIx can convert 2 channels or 5.1 channels into either 6.1 or 7.1. PLII and PLIIx have Movie, Music and Game modes as well. PLII(x) Music is highly configurable and I use it for everything, including normal cable television channels. I don't know how old the 3000 is, but I bet it doesn't support these new decoding formats (definitely NOT PLIIx as that is very new).

If you don't need or want 7.1, you can always use the two surround backs to drive a stereo pair of speakers in zone2 - say the Patio.
