“With most Yamaha receivers, you only have 7 amps built in” I need some clarification on this. I was under the impression that there was only 1 amp that powered multiple channels. Can somebody clarify this, one way or the other ?

One amplifier cannot power multiple channels simultaneously. With a typical stereo receiver, there are two power amplifiers, one for each channel. If there were only one amplifier, it would be mono even if you hooked up two speakers to it (as, for example, when one hooks up speakers to "A" and "B" terminals on a receiver, both the A and B speakers receive the exact same signal because they are driven by the same amplifiers). So a typical 7.1 channel receiver has seven power amplifiers (as the ".1" is expected to have its own amplifier).

What might be the source of your confusion is the ambiguously used term "amplifier". Often, it is used to designate one box that may contain any number of amplifiers. However, only a mono amplifier contains only one amplifier in the box.

I've known that all along, but for some reason the way the statement was worded got me crossed up. I don't know why, but I was equating 1 power supply=1 amplifier, which obviously isn't true. Guess I'm too used to monoblocks. Thanks for getting me back on track.
