Yamaha DVD player question

I am interested in buying the Yamaha DVD-S1800BL 1080p Upconverting DVD SACD Player. I really just want it for audio but I read a review about a feature they have called "Audio Direct" which supposedly shuts off all video functions on the player to prevent interference.

To me this sounds kinda hokey that it doesn't do this automatically but what really bothers me is that someone also said that when you use this feature it shuts off the display and that's something I don't want. Anyone know anything about this.

I'm also considering the Denon DVD-1940CI Universal Scaling DVD/DVDA/SACD Player but it has a function called "Pure Direct" and I don't know if that does the same thing, and the NAD C 515BEE.

I'm actually rather partial to the more high-end tweaked sound of Yamaha and I don't know if the Denon or the NAD can match that or not.

Your thoughts are appreciated

What are you going to hook this up to?

In pure direct you will have audio only.

Now DVD and CD are PCM, SACD is DSD.

If you are using a receiver or pre/pro with HDMI, then set the player to bit stream and let the receiver/pre/pro do the decoding. Audio quality will be dependent on the decoding device.

SACD is a different matter and few receiver shave DSD decoders. So to hear from the DSD decoder without conversion to PCM, you will need to use the 5.1 analog outs and feed them the ext multichannel inputs. There will be no picture in this event, but SACD does not support a picture, no does CD so what is your issue?

Next issue, why are you investing in a DVD universal player, and bot a BD universal player. SACD will be replaced by BD audio only and faster than people think. SACD is a highly floored unhandy system and hobbled out of the starting gate.

I would recommend the Oppo BD or the ES version of it.

+1 on what TLS said, in particular in regards to the Oppo advice.

Furthermore; I have a Yamaha univeral multi disc player. It's a decent player that I still do use when I want to load multiple discs, but it's features and performance pale in comparision to my Oppo.

BD audio will be here, in spades, in the very near future.

My suggestion is to not waste your money on an soon to be obsolete player.
