Xbox 360 HD-DVD 1080?

I have my xbox connected with component cables, my TV is a Samsung HL-S5088W 50" 1080p DLP. it shows that the display is 1920x1080i@60hertz.

should it be @ 1080p or is this as good as it gets using the 360 as an HD-DVD player? The picture looks amazing but I'd like to see the "best" that I can.

Thank you in advance

As long as you have the latest updates applied it should allow you to output at 1080p over component, so as long as your tv is native 1080p, then by all means use that. I have a Samsung DLP HL-R5067W which is 720p native, but looks better when I have the 360 to output 1080i instead of 720p for some reason.

The 360 is set at 1080p in the settings, but for some reason the TV selects 1080i still.

Can the display accept 1080p? or does it only support 1080i input?

Oh I found this interesting little factoid
The Samsung HL-S5687W's principal feature is its 1080p native resolution, which means that its DLP imaging chip should be able to produce 1,920x1,080 pixels onscreen--see Performance for more. It achieves this high native resolution with the help of wobulation, a technology that effectively doubles the horizontal resolution; in reality, the DLP chip itself has only 960x1,080 discrete pixels, as opposed to LCoS 1080p displays that have all 1,920x1,080 discrete pixels (more info on DLP and wobulation). Of course all sources, including HDTV, computers, DVD, and standard-def, are scaled to fit the pixels. With 720p HDTV and lower-resolution sources, the benefits of 1080p are more limited.
cheers:)

The first generation of Samsung 1080p DLP tv's do not accept native 1080p unfortunately.

The HLS is not the first generation.

This particular TV is supposed to accept 1080p over component.

Indeed, some people are doing just that.

"I have the S5088W and I get no flicker with my Xbox 360. running 1080p Im running with the Component."

Thank you for all of your replys, I have found out that the 360 will only output hd-dvd to 1080p with the vga cable not with component. I think they will be putting out an HDMI cable soon too that should output 1080p.

Microsoft is releasing a new version of the 360 that uses HDMI so the cable wont work with current versions. Just a heads up.

Typical M$, I guess I'll have to give the VGA cable a try then.

Many people say that using VGA gives a superior picture than component anyway...

May I ask where you saw this? I ask because I would love to use the VGA cable to my TV (Mitsu 65" 1080p), but I had read the opposite of your post in my limited research - washed out colors, limited contrast blacks.

Right now I'm using the component out set to 1080i because I appear to get a refresh issue at 1080p.

If you could point me at a source or two, I'd be really grateful!

It's "common wisdom" in gaming and computer hardware forums. I hear the line repeatedly from people who use the VGA cable.

They say they get more vibrant colors and that component looks washed out in comparison.

Hmm. Don't know why you are having problems with it. My 360 is set at 1080p and i have it hooked up to an acer LCD tv and it gives me the 1080p message when i turn it on. Same thing with the 360 HD-DVD player. I hope you figure it out.
