Really wasn't expecting that! Sounds like it was a possible suicide.

Oscar winner and comedian Robin Williams died this morning at 63. While his publicist wouldn’t confirm that his death was a suicide, a rep did issue this statement. “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

So shocking and Sad it. I grew up on his comedies. I saw him filming a movie in NY once. I also liked his last comedy series on CBS The Crazy Ones - CBS.com, which was cancelled a month ago. RIP Funny Man.

Loved his humor and thought his performances in movies like Bicentennial Man and What Things May Come we're powerful and thoughtful.

He was a great natural comedian and a surprisingly versatile actor. A sad and surprising loss.

Williams, along with George Carlin and Bill Cosby are my generation's greatest comedians.

no shlt!?!? that's sad but not surprising. I remember, vaguely, an interview where he described his lonely childhood growing up in affluent Grosse Point, MI as the son of a big time executive for one of the car companies and I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. All that money ... well as the Fab Four used to sing, "can't buy me love" ... RIP

Wow. I knew he was gonna be a huge hit the first time I saw him on Happy Days. And his early HBO specials are still classics.

Robin Williams and Jonathan Winters – two birds of the same feather.

It's hard to think of them without smiling.

Sooo used to watch Mork & Mindy. Loved that show. It is just really shocking; I'm almost at a loss for words. He's sort of local too, having lived in the SF Bay Area for many years.

His performance in One Hour Photo was very disturbing - he was REALLY creepy in that role and performed it extremely well. He was also quite good as the antagonist in Insomnia with Al Pacino.

This is making the rounds on Facebook and I thought it would be appropiate here. I would hope he would approve of it.

I had a good friend kill himself about a year ago leaving his wife and two daughters behind. He wasn't one of those guys who did it out of spite to prove something, to hurt them. I learned a lot about what goes on in someone's mind when they do that. It's a scary place. I mean think about how dark a place you'd have to be in to calmly plan to take your own life. It's a very sad thing.

Long term suffers of depression and dysphoria have heard so many 'feel better' and 'be cheerful' platitudes, that, those things just don't really work. Most appreciate the effort, but, it's hard to re-wire. Lots of the treatments today also have pretty weak evidence bases, despite the psych-industry promoting them. It's a big problem...

nbcnews.com seems to have forgotten the rest of the world for a day, remembering Williams. Too bad he can't read it... maybe it would have changed his mind.

I remember watching his stand up routines when I was a kid in the 70's. Funny stuff but sometimes it was hard to keep up with him. When he would go on talk shows you could tell the hosts would have their hands full just trying to keep him in line.

A lot of his dramatic roles were better than his comedies. Awakenings and Final Cut spring to mind.

I suppose now we have to wait for the toxicology reports to see what was in his system. We've all seen those commercials for various drugs to treat depression with one of the side effects being suicidal thoughts. Weird.
