why me!?!?!?

So i'm just sitting there, watching some tv, next thing i know....no more sound....no more picture. So i get up to go investigate and I immediately smell burnt electronics. So it ends up my reciever (H/K AVR230) decided to fry. It won't play audio from any source (analog, digital or FM radio) and it wont switch video (or pass through video for that matter), even the OSD dosen't work anymore. And i'm basically screwed because the reciever is 3 years old & it was bought off of ebay. I took of the case cover (yes i unplugged it & let it sit for a few minutes) to look for blown capacitors & didn't see any. Anything i should look for to see what the problem could be?

If you smelled something like burned electrical components, it could most likely be a transformer or power supply. These things might not be very easy to see. Check for obvious damage under a bright light.

Does any lights come on or are there other indications of power? There usually are internal fuses but if you smelled a burning smell it doesn't sound good. With the cost of bench time these days at repair shops, it doesn't pay to repair electronics. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear.

I feel your pain. I lost my projector after 2 years of use a few months ago. It would have cost over $2K to repair. I trashed it (after paying bench time to determine the prob). It felt good to smash it with a hammer I ended up buying a new one.

thats the thing, the display comes on, all the lights light up & everything so it "looks" good, but it doesn't function. And, using a flashlight, looked for blown caps, & didn't find anything

Does it have pre-amp outs to see if the prob is only with the amp section?

good excuse to upgrade to the new 240..

Yeah a few years back we had a lightening strike near our house, needless to say it sucked.

it wasn't lighting out @ all and regarding the preouts...it does have pre amp outs, but that doesn't really help me much. But i mean it still doesn't switch or pass through video & that has nothing to do with amplification

hehe, and regarding upgrading to the 240....would that be a good choice? My budget if it has to be replaced would probably be around $400 maybe a little more. I mean i was really happy with my HK reciever, but i dont know if there would be a better choice for driving the speakers that i have....even though i'd like to get 2 behringer A500's...so that isn't really an issue, but i planned on the A500's as my next upgrade, and definately DIDN'T plan on buying a new reciever for a while. But anyway, what would be a good reciever in that price range? I dont have a hdtv yet but i definately plan on getting one within a year or 2. That is unless something else breaks for no reason

Surge Protection?

Did you happen to have any type of surge protection for your system? With the nasty storms we have here in Atlanta, you're begging for a good fry without some sort of device for this.

When initially looking for decent surge protection, it was difficult parting with decent money for something that's (likely) not going to make your system sound or perform any better. But after finding some decent offerings from Panamax and TrippLite for less than $150.00 (TrippLite HT10DBS is currently going for between $50-70), it was a small price for piece of mind, considering how much some of us dump into this addiction...err, hobby.

yes i did, I had a $100 monster surge protector that i've had for a about 3 years. but I mean if i did have a surge (there was NO lightning @ all) then i wouldn't think that the reciever would be the thing to fry...if it was a surge, why couldn't it of fried my cable box instead???

You might be able to find a good deal on a HK 235... The big difference between that and the 240 is the gay-pod interface (I hate ipod, almost as much as I hate Bose. If you've worked retail, you might understand.)

well, since i have a gay er...ipod, that is an appealing feature of the 240. And i worked for 1.5 years @ best buy, so i know all about retail work (and about ridiculous mark-ups )

I think, if I am forced to buy a new reciever, I would go with the AVR240 (i can get one, new, for $358 on onecall.com) Unless somebody else has another recommendation in that price range, I'm leaning towards another H/K

well i tell you what, after looking up the Yamaha RX-V757 I am really impressed with the features it offers at the price. As much as I love the look of the H/K products (i was just as pleased with its performance), i'm tempted to stray away & buy something else

Periodically, we (Circuit City) have them (240) on sale for $299. Why? Who knows, but that is a pretty good price!
