Which Recievers : Idependent cross overs for seperate channels

In the market for HDMI 1.3 receiver and was considering yamaha's offerings.... Looking at 663 and 863.

Question: Which all Yamaha / Marantz / Onkyo models have variable independent cross over for separate channels ?

So that i can set separate cross over points for different speakers in my set up. I know the Onkyo Tx-Sr705 comes with this feature but im a little scared of the HDMI lip sync issues with the onkyo.

My mind must be going because I thought more manufactures offered independent x-over settings. But checking manuals again, it appears only Denon, Onkyo, and HK products are offering the feature.

I assume you are talknig about fronts to sub crossover

Most systems you set the front speakers as "small" and then it crosses over to the subwoofer 80hz and below. Some AVRs allow you to set this crossover point 40hz, 66 Hz, 80 Hz, 100Hz, 150 hz, 200Hz. Most subs have a cross over also, normally a rheostat or a rotary dial.

I may have misunderstood your question. because you stated "separate cross over points for different speakers in my set up" I made the assumption between sub and main fronts. If you want different crossovers for each speaker, I am not aware of AVRs taht can do that without possible external circuitry.

There is also a cross over for manin speakers to tweeter somewhere between 2500HZ-5000Hz. Usually you can't change this.

Some AVRs have equalizers and you can sontrol the levels of various frequencies.

Now, in summary usually the crossover point even if you can't set it is reasonable. But I assume you want to change. it is fairly easy to find out about any specific AVR becuase almoist all have user manual .PDFs online and you can check exactly.

As you have already discovered, the Onkyo's do it on the 705 and above.

A rep from Yamaha told me that only the flagship Z1 had this feature, but I find that hard to believe.

As far as I know, you can set different X-over frequencies for each of the front, centre, surround and surround back speakers with the following models:

Denon - Later models only, e.g. 2808 and above.
HK - Even the older models such as the 235.
Sony ES - Even the older models such as the DAXES, X=1,2,3,4,5,7.
Onkyo - Not sure about the older models but the new ones for sure.

Well i hope this seperate crossover is not going to make system sound like **** got i'm getting the rx-v661@550 in India.I'm hoping my surrounds would be ok with a 70hz cross over.

Onkyo 705@$800 ( too expensive, lip sync issues)
Yamaha 663@$750(expensive, still no seperate crossovers i believe)

Two reasons i chose 661 for :-
1. Does LPCM , since i plan to buy a PS3 anyway..
2. This is all part of master plan where i'll be convincing my dad in a year or two to buy a Emotiva XMR-1 or a preamp in that range so that i can take the 661 to my bedroom to run my future ascend's.

The 661 doesn't give you 70 as an option. You will have to go with 60 or 80.

Those prices are high. Some stores have deals on the RX-V663 for $400 US. Maybe they could ship to Canada for a little extra.

Obviously you were willing to ship the amp and speakers up there. If you can hold out a few more months the new Emotiva UMC-1 will be out "this summer".

I have the UMC-1 on preorder presently but i changed plans i figured i would buy the 661 and use it as a preamp for a year or 2 and then invest in an Emotiva XMC-1 or a preamp in that range.

What do you think of 60hz crossover setting you think it would work well ?

With your setup, I'd be inclined to run all speakers small w/80 Hz x-over and the LFE/Bass Out set to Both. The 60 Hz x-over may leave a slight hole in the frequency response of the surrounds.

80hz it is, i was deciding between 60 hz and 80hz you just made it easier. All speakers set to 'small'

Question about LFE/Bass Out set to Both:
In the manual it states that it would redirect the bass to the front speakers and the sub woofer regardless of small/large setting.
Would my mains be fine with frequency's below 40hz ?
