Not sure which Oppo dvd player to buy.I am looking for good upscaling as my old dvd players will not do this. The choice is between the 980 or the 981.Any suggestions from some Oppo owners would be great....Thanks in advance

Depending on your display.. go for the 981. The 983 is a rip off IMO.

You may want to check out this page from Oppo.

There are several differences but my take is the 980 is geared a little more toward sound plus gives you component out and interlaced out for an outboard scaler. The 981 is more video oriented and has great PAL/NTSC conversion.

I have the 981 and I can say the PAL/NTSC stuff works great. I don't mind the lack of DSD over HDMI. It's definitely the best player I've ever owned.

I can second this. My 981 has worked flawlessly with PAL & NTSC videos, DVD-A and SACD. If video is your primary concen you definately want the 981over the 980. I haven't seen a 983 in action, so I couldn't tell you how much better the scaler is vs. the 981.

P.S. What display is this being connected to? The reason I ask is that the 981 has had some macroblock issues with DLP and some Plasma displays.

Not just DLP, but all rear projection TVs. I have the 981 and get macroblocking, but honestly, it's quite minimal. Sometimes it bothers me, but for the most part, I don't notice it all that much. The picture is absolutely stellar for well-mastered material, and the audio is no slouch either. I'm delighted with my 981.

jliedeka is correct when he says that the 980 is geared more towards audio and the 981 more towards 981. If you can afford the 983, hey, why not get the best of both worlds! It all depends on what your focus is, and what kind of TV you have. Check out the link that jliedeka provided; it has a comparison between all the Oppos, and they give recommendations near the bottom of the chart.

cheers,

Its not the players,

MB is usually caused by the actual disc! However poor procesing within the player will magnify the problem. Even the higher end Denon's have had issues with some disc's so nobody is void of that issue.
