Which Oppo Player to buy.

Ok well Ive decided on getting one of the famed oppo players. Simply because I need an upconverting DVD player, and with HD right around the corner (By this I mean a winner in the HD-DVD battle) Its really not worth spending tons-o-cash for me. Now however the question is Which player to get. I will be buying a Samsung HL-S5687W in the VERY near future. So do I get the Oppo DV-981HD ($230 on Amazon.com) or save the money and get the Oppo DV-970HD ($150 on Amazon.com) Basicly is it worth spending the 80 bucks to have 1080p over 1080i ?

Buy the 970. The 981 and 971 have Faroudja processing which sometimes does not bode well with DLP. I don't think you will notice the diff in upconverting to 720p vs 1080p. You can also call Oppo and ask for their recommendation, but I believe they will tell you the 970. I would buy it from them instead of Amazon. You can pick the length cable you want with the unit, plus no worries if you have a warranty issue.

Ok guys, my TV will be here this week (Samsung HL-S5687W 1080p DLP) so I can really use some input on this. I sent them an E-mail asking what they would recomend, so well see where that goes. But I really value youre opnions. What dukester made sense, but I Id like to confirm if thats what everyone thinks as well. I like the 981 the best, and I think Im gonna risk it and buy that one.

If you think you're going to get rid of it in the very near future buy the 970. It's $80 cheaper. Money you can put toward that HD player.

But on the other hand if you plan on holding on to it for awhile, I'd give the 981 a shot. It's always nicer to use native scan rates with the display. OPPO offers a 30 day 100% refund guarantee. If you don't like it send it back. You could also step down to the 970 at that time.

The issues with the 981 and 971 players has to do with "macroblocking". You can read more about it here:

You may not have the problem, though.

(BTW: my 981 is on order. Hope for delivery soon)

EDIT: If you do buy an OPPO, buy it directly from them. I have read in other forums where there was issues on returns if not bought from them directly.

I just received my 981 and have it hooked to my 50" DLP Samsung. Played a couple movies so far and picture is great. I have not noticed any macroblocking so far. I have DNR and Truelife off on the player. The picture is very good with great color representation. I previously returned a Samsung 860 and Sony upconverting as the picture quality was sad. This player is far superior. I'll update if I find anything unusual.
