Which Amp? Pioneer 1019, VSX-82TXS , or VSX-01TXH?

Yes. It is too old (VSX-82TXS) to match with your TV.
Well I still have the 82 and it works fine with my PJ so I don't get why you say it is too old. It would be fine for his budget. Also the 82 has pre outs for external amps and you use the stereo analog audio source inputs for your turntable. I don't know why people are giving the OP the wrong info on those options???

I already have a preamp for the turntable... I haven't used it before, but I've got it.

Regarding the 82, I didn't see it where it was supposed to be. Saw both the 01 and 03 for quite a bit of cash at BB/Magnolia and slightly better at 6th Ave. Any recommendations for other vendors would be welcomed via PM.

I was only exaggerating a tiny bit. ;)

Anyway, he can get the VSX-01TXH or even the VSX-03TXH for about the same price. So I made a short cut to get there faster. ;)
No needs to waste time... ;)

And of course the VSX-82TXS is a very nice unit too, but it's already over a year old, and by the way things go, it will be totally obsolete by Christmas!

Gotta follow the flow, no? :)

Actually, you are absolutely right, it is the only one receiver from the three choices that the OP has downsized to, that has a PHONO input, for Christ sake.

So the VSX-82TXS is the better choice after all.

And I believe that his wife will curse him, if he will go with the Pioneer Elite SC-05, because of overexpenditure.

I got a list of all the best vendors around in a close by, not so far away thread, maybe someone can find it and link it here.

Can you just click under my name and view all my posts (before I get to 100,000 :D). Seriously, it's not that far back on my posts. I just don't remember which thread, but I know for sure that it was under this category "Amps, Pre/Pros & Receivers".
I'll look it out for you.

Price range = $500 to $600, right? I know that already (your wife...). ;)

Don't go too far now.

I'd love to do that, but the wife will lose her mind with the $500 ones... $700 could cost me a divorce.... thanks for the suggestions. BTW, I can't find the official owners thread so far... am I looking in the wrong spot?
Those Orb speakers probably aren't very demanding and won't need a wallop of power. I would suggest a lower model on the Pioneer line (makes your wallet and wife happier). The Pioneer VSX-519 would be a great option for a budget minded person. Remember that you don't have to spend a lot to get great options and surround flexibility. The VSX-519 has 2 HDMI inputs that support audio over HDMI (this means you only have to connect one cable to the receiver from the source to get video and sound, then of course one HDMI output to the television).

The Pioneer VSX-819 has an additional HDMI input if you needed it. The 519 street price is around $200 and the 819 is around $300.

*note: I'd be surprised if there was a notable difference in SQ or power between the 519 up to the 1019, they all weigh approximately the same, about 19 pounds. That's not a concrete indication of power, but it's a pretty good one. Since your system will be 5.1 there's no real reason to get a 7.1 receiver unless you really think you will upgrade to that. I live in an apartment and know I don't need 7.1, most situations don't call for it and your wife will appreciate less speakers.;)

For you Matty Red Sox

Ok Matty, I got it (that list of the best vendors on the internet).

It was in the thread called "Receivers Under $350" on page 3, post #27.

Here: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55651&page=3

But Seth=L just above got a good point there. To take in consideration indeed.
(But I must admit that I'm quite surprised, coming from Seth=L.) Perhaps, you shouldn't listen to him after all... (Run out of smilies, this one will be a sarcastic one.)

And it's good to know that you already have a Phono preamp.
That makes things much easier now.

Anyway, check my list and pick the receiver that you are most interested in, and just look around for the best deal.

Just a note. The room correction in the new upper models can make a difference and for the additional money might be worth it. To me this is one of the better features that are available on avrs and can have a profound impact on the overall sound experience.

Wow thanks for all of the help! I did consider the 1019/1018. For the price, I think that it's worth going with the 03 or 01. I did look at the 519-on up, but I am worried about being able to upgrade, I have bought an amp on average every 15 years, and see that as slowing down ... so this may be the last one for a while, having ample power is a plus for me. I also like the room correction, the ipod feature and the separate zones.

Thanks for the connections to the other sites... BTW does anyone have any experience with United Online Shoppers? I've heard good things but, not a lot yet.

I would not consider the 1019 or below (in the Pioneer line) to be an amp. It's barely a receiver any more. To be an amp it has to have evidence of gonads. I don't think it has any...

If preouts is a concern of yours I would consider the Marantz SR 4002. I know you said you wanted to stick with Pioneer, but I am more of a budget minded kind of guy. It doesn't have as many frilly features as the Pioneer's of the same price bracket do. I'm also not sure how the Auto calibration from each company stacks up to one another.

Marantz SR 4002 refurbished w/ 1 year warranty $299 FREE SHIPPING

For $50 more + shipping costs you can get a NIB Marantz SR 4002 w/ 3 year warranty from the same website.

LOTRs is making me feel all rusty.:(

They have an amp, and can process audio/video, but to you it might as well be a toolbox. If you don't need gobs of power, but want features not offered by older, cheaper, more powerful AVR's, they're perfectly adequate. On the other hand, some would argue a powerful AVR w/ an uber powerful 5 or 7 channel amp is serious overkill for a modest home theater...

^ Way to go Patrick. Tell them all. :)

* But Seth=L has a very good point here, the Marantz SR4002 for only $299 is a very sweet deal of a receiver. This time I agree with his reasonning.

You kinda missed my point....and only a very few would turn down extra headroom IMO. :)

Congratulations,

You'll have plentry room for expansion for a while. Post your thoughts on it and the Orb system when you get it all together. Did you get the Orb subwoofer as well, or will the wife allow for you to go with a superior (albeit larger) subwoofer?

Shhhh... I'm going to tell her about the 03 soon. I got the Orb woofer, and have been playing it with the old SONY CR-PPY 1 receiver (see what I did there?), and it's fine - there's just such a small amount of power and the speakers are not mounted yet. I hung them from the speaker cables (the super went ahead and used some wire I had laying around - it sounds okay, so I guess he laid it okay, he used 150 feet to wire a 20 by 16 foot room, with not much left over (actually nothing). Now of course when I left I reboxed the orbs and the woofer - sad to put them away... tomorrow the ceiling mounts go in and dust will fly...

Oh the subwoofer is in a metal case, maybe I'll have an autoshop paint it room color... is this a good or bad idea?

Sounds like a good idea to me. The wife might not even suspect what it is for, while blending with the room. That will give you another shot at getting a second allowance for that second sub. :D
