What's the difference between Dolby Digital & DTS?

There's more than a few RP CRT's with HDMI connections. Toshibas, Hitachi's, and I think even some of the later Mits. models for example. I believe there have also been some manufacturers who have labeled their 720 or 768 plasmas and LCD's as "1080i", probably because that was the highest resolution they could accept (this was before the emergence of 1080p).

I was talking about display reolution, not resolution acceptance to be converted to native resolution.

I'm not sure what you mean here....CRT's don't have a native resolution as fixed pixel displays do. They can display a range of resolutions.

My CRT RPTV displays HD in 1080i (not 720p)

and displays SD in 540p (not on 480i)

Ok, to settle what my TV is here it goes: About a year and half old 52" Panasonic LCD Projection, HD 1080i and yes it does have 2 HDMI inputs.

To me that says that for HD your display is 720p and incoming 1080i signal is thus converted to 720p. And it also suggests that the TV conversion may not be as effective as the STB's or DVD player.

In which case you're probably better off setting all inputs to 720p, as the deinterlacing may end up losing 540 lines of resolution if it loses all the odd or even lines.

Your eyes should tell you.

Ok, I am starting to follow what you guys are saying....but what do you mean by "the TV conversion may not be as effective as the STB's or DVD player?"

Also, so even though 1080i is higher resolution 720p is a better picture, not sure I follow....?

Your display is in 720p for HD. For programs in 1080i, you must decide if it is better to have the STB convert 1080i to 720p or have the STB transmit 1080i to your TV which will then need to convert in 720p. The latter you know so try the former (STB to send only 720p for HD). You may need to redo the Picture setup for your STB.

Yes 1080i is a higher and better resolution. But your TV can only display 720p

STB = Set Top Box which is a receiver for cable or satellite TV service.

If you don't have one my comments were also applicable to your DVD player, should that be a player capable of upconverting via HDMI or if it is a Blu-Ray player.

Lol, ok, I figured it was something like that. Yes I do have Direct TV, but it's non HD because really I just don't watch much TV at all and am not going to pay for it. Much more into movies

I any case I will take your advice and set the input to 720p and see the difference from 1080i.
