9.1/2 is the new Dolby Pro Logic IIz

What everyone is talking about is actually the new PL IIz from Dolby, which can take anything and output it in 9.1 or in future 9.2. I read somewhere that Dolby True-Hd can actually use up to 14.1 channels of discrete sound but it is limited to 9.1 (Either that or its 10.1, can't quite remember) by the bluray specs. This may be something we see in future.

I personally think that adding height channels is a good idea as it gives true 3D sound, but I think for it to be effective it should be at least 11.1 so that you can hear it all the way up to the ceiling and down to the floor, I think adding it to the surround channels would be too much though as it would not really add anything else, like the 22.2 surround sound thats going to be with UHDTV. (And IMO is way,way too much)

Interesting.. Anyone could have more than one sub. Most subs have an in and an out, so you could easily daisy chain more than one sub, making 9.x or 7.x. The ultimate surround sound would be one continuous speaker going around the room where at any location point can be reproduced.

Aesthetically I think we're delving away from WAF
In dedicated home theater setups, probrably feasible for the ultra high end setups, but to the mid - lower end setups, typically 7.1 is more than enough. I think the additional discrete information would be better utilized for sensory involvement (I.E. tactile transducers, lighting cues (strobes), air movement, etc...) Like Disney interative rides
Sure we could add on additional speaker up and along the ceiling, but if your chair "moved" due to rush of a jet or car chase, that would add more realism to the experience.... Just my .02$ on this...

I am Soooooooooooooooooooooo happy with 5.1 discrete audio right now, I just don't see any point to 7.1, 9.2, 11.3, etc.:D
