What's in a speaker upgrade...or how high is up?

ha, one year later, I have something to add:

a 1k upgrade does not give you 1k worth of "speaker" upgrade, but I believe most of it goes to better enclosure materials, better build quality of the enclosure, better finish on the enclosure ... and like someone said in this thread, simply a louder version of the cheaper model (via multiple drivers).
Hey Mike...

We'll actually "get it" one of these days. LOL.

I'm still drooling over your new HT, btw.

yeah, when we get enough money to buy them all :)

subwoofers are easier I tell you!

thanks, i'm designing the ugly version (dedicated HT#2) right now. OPERATION: BABY FREEDOM
I need to move HT setup to another room ... and I have to do it the ugly way, no aesthetics, just the basics and maybe some paint.

Keep the lights turned low. Save on the paint! ;)

I don't agree with this. The goal of the speaker designer is to make a speaker that fits his guide lines. If the speaker is supposed to be transparent, then make it so. If warm, make it so etc etc. Also, some people don't prefer transparent, so it CAN'T be every speaker designers goal.
I agree with this. I've listened to very neutral speakers that range in price from under $1000 to over $25k and they've never been to my liking.

This is a great thread, folks! I believe you may have inadvertantly answered my receiver question over in the thread I started in the Amps section: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31895 along the way. I found the following particularly insightful...

Because the $1000 model’s continuous current to the speakers is considerably stronger. And that gives the speakers a better sound regardless of volume level.
Are you saying it's like the power supplies that we use on our lasers in the lab at my workplace: You get a purer/more stable beam as opposed to a "stronger" beam when you have a better power supply?

So long as you think of the power supplied as "potential", then the answer is yes. Can the speakers or, in your case, the lasers utilize the abundance of current? Big question...and not as easily answered as you might think.

I'm planning in upgrading my Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 to a 9.5, even though my room is 11 m2.

That comment might have saved me some 400-500 euros.
