What would you do with this room?

Attached is a diagram of my room (yes very crude...but i did it in paintbrush :)). My TV is a 56" Samsung HDTV with 1080P output. I would like to build some sort of home theater in this room but i don't really know what to buy and where i should put what. I was considering a Bose Lifestyle 48 (which is also what my budget is around...possibly more) but after reading about it here I will stay away from it. What would you experts recommend I do in a small room like this one? Thanks in advance!

Well, the price on the Bose system is $4000. Is that your budget?

What kind of TV is it? A big DLP TV, or is it a flat panel on the wall?

Lastly, because you have a small room, you don't need huge speakers, so you can get away with smaller models (from high quality manufacturers).

Quick response!! It's a Samsung HLR DLP 5688W. My budget is $4-$5K.

Excellent. I see your TV is pretty slim, so that will make it difficult to use it for speaker mounting. How much room do you have on either side of the TV for speakers?

Also, what would you say to a new end table? I see one in your future...one that looks like this:

Not only does it look pretty, but that end table will rumble your room (it's SVS's PB-12+ subwoofer).

As far as speakers go, are there any guidelines on their appearance, size, etc?

First, I would put the TV on the short wall. Makes everything easier. Then get thick blinds for the windows so there isn't any harsh reflections.

After that, go and audition some speakers and receivers in your price range. Find out what sound you like, and what the speakers/receivers are, and report back.

The TV is in the only feasible place for the room since I didn't really draw it to scale. It's location is more or less permanent. It's a pretty small room. I changed the drawing a little. It's an old NYC house. I have room for maybe about speakers 7-8" on each side of the tv...unless i wall mount above the tv. (room is only about 8 ft. 5" high). Yes it's small but I would still like to enjoy my A/V setup :) If the room is that small...would it sound okay to put speakers in the corners of the room? Preferrably smaller speakers are better I woudl think. But I really am concerned with high quality more than anything else.

I think in your situation that on-wall speakers would work best for the front sound stage. Larger bookshelves on stands would be optimum, but because of the position of the TV with respect to the doorways, I don't think it would work. I'm thinking something from Axiom's on-wall line, or perhaps some other on-wall speakers.

Another question: How long is the small section of wall to the left of the TV? That is, the sidewall that toches the front wall and stops at the left doorway.

Edit: I'm gonna step out for awhile. I'll be sure to post back when I'm on again.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Personally... for that size room I would recommend Axiom audio M22ti bookshelve speakers. They are 7.23 inches wide and would probably suit your setup well. An SVS sub would also be a nice compliment to the overall system. What are you using for a reciever?

i havent bought anything yet...just the oppo dvd player...the small section of wall is only about 15 inches wide. i was considering a denon 3806 unless there is something better i should think about..

Hmm.... I know this $200 DVD player that would be perfect for you. I think you should consider a ping socket negotiation. Is your couch green?

Maybe.......

There are always options and these guys so far have given some good ones. Here are some more.

1. Slide the TV over toward the doorway on the right as far as you are comfortable with (wall mount if possible). Get rid of the table in the upper right corner. One main speaker could go there and put the other obviously on the left of the TV near the doorway on the left. The previous suggestion of flat panel speakers would be good here also but if you can fit some bookshelfs on stands in those locations, it would be better. Mount the center channel on the wall above the TV (or below if you prefer). If you are able to mount the TV on the wall you could purchase a rack to go under it for your gear.

2. I think you could get rid of the table in the bottom left and if you still need one there just get a smaller narrower one to go in there. Then move the couch on the bottom of the picture to the left and move the couch on the left all the way to the right with the back to the radiator and the table there on the lower right could look like the one you have on the lower left. That would shift your viewing position more to on axis with the TV and audio.

3. Then you could mount your L & R surrounds on the rear side walls(or in the corners). Now the room is a little less open, but it is cosier and with the proper fine tuning should sound pretty good.

Just tossing around some ideas. I'm sure some other folks on here will put their two cents in. There's alot of good audiophiles here so I'm sure you'll get other good ideas. Good luck !! BTW, awesome TV. I'm jealous.

The EP175 is not a good value for a subwoofer. With his budget, he can afford a much higher quality SVS unit, or an upper end Axiom sub.

Very true, just by the speakers individually, and get the pb12+

Is the Axiom Epic Grandmaster 350 a good deal? Or should I even consider the Mordaunt Short Avant Series?

Yes, but I'd still opt for a different subwoofer. On your budget, you can afford the much better EP500 or EP600, or a PB-12+ from SVS. The only issue is that the stands for the M-22 speakers have fairly wide bases and I don't think they would work in your room. I did consider this though. You may also wish to think of the equivalent on-wall system using the W22 and W150 speakers.

I'd look at Artison LCR series; about $1500 retail. They're 6" wide and would fit your TV. They need a fair amount of power to run, don't go below a Denon 3806.

I'd cut in coaxial ceiling speakers for your surrounds.
