Adding two extra speakers to the rear is not very convenient for most because they have a couch backed up against a wall. Most people do not have a dedicated home theater room that is designed for 7.1 or 6.1. The wife does not ususally allow speakers mounted on walls. 5.1 is typical and most practicial from an installation standpoint. I have the Yamaha 7.1 (two presence speakers in front, on each side of main as well as the two rear surrounds.). This is easily workable because of where they are located. 6.1 and 7.1 require that extra speaker in the back or on each additional side not practical in many cases.

dunno how to answer this.

For HT I use 5.1 but for music I use either 2.0 or 2.1.

Placing that 6tt or 7th speaker(s) isn't always feasible.

Yeah, DVD's that are even mastered in 6.1 will still work fine in 5.1 so i dont see the point in adding a rear channe, or two for that matter!

Well, unless you have a big, deticated home theatre room. We will have this room in my new house.

the standard 5.1....more speakers mean more placement problems and scuffle with the decor police :p

.....Rip Van Woofer, the term "audiophile"....

....since humans are not dogs, humans can't hear the "inaudible", can they?....and doesn't the word, "inaudible", have finality standing alone?....audiophile equipment then, is the best that can be hoped for, isn't it?....sad, boils down to money to be able to wear a nametag....thank goodness for our tone controls, to help us LOVE the equipment we DO have.....

7.1 for me, I think the rear channels add depth to a movie. It also fills in the huge void in the back of the room.

I am running 6.1 as I have a diamond shaped listening area. Again, not many of us have a dedicated perfect dimension. Not sure it is really getting me anything more than the 5.1 did but I was trying to fill the gap in the back of the room. Once my daughter moves out in a few years, I'll have the dedicated listening room so I can play with wall treatments, traps and all of the crap I have no idea about today but am looking forward to playing with!
