A lot of info here - trying to needle it down to my own specific needs. Upgrading my system, will likely go with either Def Tech Mythos STS or Monitor Audio GS60 as loudspeakers. I have Niles CM 760 in the ceiling for surrounds.

I need a new receiver - Have an old Denon 2800. Need 7.1 and zoning. Need XM, iPod, USB. Want network capabilities.

For video - I will use solely for surround sound when watching DVDs.

I want the best sounding receiver for two channel stereo (will stream mp3s most of the time), with very good surround capabilities.

I thought the Denon 3808 was a slam dunk - the more I read, the more confused.

Any help?

Poot,

After reading everything on the Denon 3808CI including all the postings here I put in my order for one last night. Has everything I need and then some.

The denon is very nice. What is bothering you about the denon?

It's the mixed reviews through these forums. Some have said Denon is excellent for HT, but okay for music/stereo - that Marantz or Yamaha or Rotel are better receivers for stereo/music.

Also would it be better (since I'm not really taking advantage of all of the 3808's features) to get a decent HT receiver (lower end) and buy an amp to drive the speakers?

thanks for the replies.

Don't believe everything they say, go and listen for yourself and while doing so, be aware of placebo effect. Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, NAD, Pioneer don't design their amps to sound 'warmer', 'more musical', 'brighter', 'more foreward', 'more lay back', 'more suitable for music/or H.T.' etc. than their competitors. They all claimed they aim for accuracy and to faithfully amplify the orignal signals.

Got the Denon 3808, Mythos ST, and Mythos 10. Sounds excellent. Like the Denon a lot - the GUI is much easier to use - tons of options, but I have mine configured about right.

Got the Denon for 1098 (1699 retai) at ABT's.
