what made you take up this hobby?

In my case, I have loved music as long as I can remember. And then a much older brother bought a good stereo (used, at a great savings, though still hundreds of dollars, which was a lot of money in those days), and then I wanted something good, too. I like good sound, and I also find the equipment itself somewhat interesting. The old analog formats had a romantic quality about them (reel to reel and finely crafted turntables), and I enjoyed the ritual of cleaning records. However, I am much happier with the sound that is currently available, and the convenience is much nicer, too, (I no longer miss cleaning discs before playing them, and would not want to go back now).

It always amazes me how good a decent stereo setup can sound. But this hobby does cost an arm and a leg...
It only costs an arm and a leg if one wants to upgrade from that decent stereo setup to something a little better....

To much honesty

I am into HT because I'm an antisocial weirdo. It started in high school with my first TV, sharp all in one three watt stereo/CD/Dual deck/turntable and a turbo grafix with turbo booster that added stereo output and composite video.

I have added bigger displays, better speakers, more watts, processors dejour, VCRs, DVDs, N64, Dreamcast, PS, PS2, HDTV. The list goes on in an effort to distract myself.

I only leave the house because I absolutly have to(make money/buy food). It seems the only part of my life that I am in control of. I sit in front of my multi thousand dollar setup drinking and smoking(alot) and get to create my own reality for hours, days, weeks, months. I'm burning through 2006 as fast as I can waiting for death. 1999 seemed like 5 min ago. Hell I justs about finished up my first decade. I'd rather feel nothing.

I'm not sure if I consider buying and tweaking with gear a hobby, but it is surely an indulgence in which I overindulge. Music is definitely THE reason I spend so many hours trying to build the perfect setup.
