What kind of speaker should I get? Help a newbie

So, tired of not being able to play my music without headphones, I decided to splurge on a pair of speakers. Now, though, being a total noob, I don't even know where to begin looking.. there is so much stuff out there! So, need some help.... Here is what's given:

Budget: around $1,000. Less (even a lot less, if that does the job) is fine. A little more is fine if it'll make a significant difference.

Speaker use: Will be used primarily for music, and a bit for movies and games. Hooked up either to a laptop or an iPod or another mp3 player. So I guess they need to have a built-in amplifier -- my main objection to a standalone amplifier is that it takes up space. The mp3s are high quality, there is some lossless music in my collection as well (though I'm not sure if a laptop with a pretty average sound card can bring out the full richness of the lossless music).

Speaker requirements: My apartment is not very large, so they should not take up a lot of space. Ideally they would go on a wall. And... I hope they sound nice. As nice as the rest of the setup allows them, that is. I know I'm not working with audiophile-quality equipment to begin with, so I don't want to pay big bucks for something I won't be able to hear anyway. At the same time, I don't want the sound quality further degraded by a cheap piece of junk.

So tell me. Help me. Guide me. Make me happy.

Thanks!

Audioengine 5+ for probably best powered media speakers.
Or go active pro monitor route: Behringer B1030A or like JBL's like mine (which I love)

The only Issue I see is all of these have rear port and this makes wall mounting HIGHLY undesirable due to substation reduction in SQ....

This monitor doesn't have rear port and will allow flexible placement:
Behringer TRUTH B2030A, but these had some issues with build-in amp before..

If you are willing to go passive bookshelfs - you'd have much more choices including sealed and front ported speakers... the amp doesn't have to be large

I'll tag on and say that the Emotiva may be overkill for what you are looking for. I know these are highly recommended speakers:

EMP Tek E41-B Bookshelf Speaker
EMP Tek E5Bi Bookshelf Speaker

The amp I would suggest if not the Emotiva is the Audiosource Amp 50:

Or even a nice AVR if you think you may want to go with a surround sound setup in the near future. Either way, your $1,000 budget will afford you a nice amp/avr and 2.1 combo.

Agreed. An amp like the emotiva mini-x would be perfect and fairly small:
Emotiva Audio | mini-X a-100 Stereo Flex Amp

It'd still leave you ~$800 for speakers/sub.
The Emotiva amp is not that big and has good power.

You can hang the Focal 705 on the wall
Music Direct - FOCAL - CHORUS 705V BOOKSHELF SPEAKERS (PR)

The Outlaw M8, is a nice little sub - to help with the bass

Get two Philharmonitors + an SMSL SA-50 amp.

I wouldn't expect much to even compare dollar for dollar.

Wow, thank you for all the responses! A great start -- you guys are so helpful! Will dive in and start educating myself. I'll try to do as much research as I can on my own, but there will probably be more questions. :) Thanks in advance for helping out.
