What kind of idiot does Denon have

writting their user manuals???? I got the AVR2309ci set up last night. It took me HOURS to learn the most basic operations because the friggin manual must have been written by someone who can't speak english! There is no input button for all the input modes, and I still can't figure out how to change to them with the remote. Surely you can do this! I have yet to figure out how to change the surrond modes with the remote either, but I have not looked into that yet.

Man this thing sounds GREAT, but I hope I don't pull all my hair out before I get it set up. The author of the manual needs to stay out of my neiborhood for the time being as well!

Hey, good morning. Some manuals can be frustrating, but the receivers sure are nice!

Input Modes
I see in the manual that there is an input mode button on the remote control. It's on the rear, and it's labeled, "INPUT AUDIO". It shows it on page 7 of the manual, and the description of that button gives the page numbers of where that function is discussed.

Surround Modes
The surround mode buttons are directly above the input mode button on the rear of the remote and are also shown on page 7.

I'm not at home now, but I will look. What blew my mind was that they have a DVD/HDP button, but those are 2 different input modes! They only way I found to switch to HDP mode was to set one of the quick select buttons to HDP. I'll look when I get home for those buttons. It was pretty late and I was already getting pissed with it.

I knew the repuation of Denon user manuals going in so when I got my AVR home, I carefully unpacked the AVR, remote and user manual. I then carefully picked up the manual by the left hand corner and walked it ot to the garaga, removed the lid to the trash can and put the manual where it should be.

I feel your pain man....Denon manuals are good for alot of things but operating insturctions is not one of them...You will get the hang of things though--it is always frustrating learning a new peice of equipment. Nonetheless that are great AVRs...

Denon is known for having terrible manuals. But who cares as once you have it setup, just enjoy!

I don't put the blame squarely on the user manual. Their remotes are terrible too, IMO. I consider myself to be pretty competent. Electronics run in my blood and I almost always figure things out without touching a manual. Denon receivers are the one exception I can think of. Even though I set them up quite often I still find myself struggling to explain operation to a novice.

AFAIK, they are written in Japanese and then translated....poorly. That is the most likely reason why they suck.

lol that's why I never buy Denon. If you can't write good manuals you don't belong in my house.

Lets not stop at the manual and remote.

At least as far as my 3808 is concerned, the UI itself is also a mess. Too many related settings that are scattered all over the place.

I went from a NAD 762 to the 3808, and it was not a pleasant transition. If the new NAD's were not so pricey and so buggy, I would have gone with one of those any day, complete with an English manual written by someone who actually reads and writes English.

But once you gets passed all of that, the Denon is a nice AVR.

I find the UI to be easy to navigate on the 3808. Much better than the manual and stupid remote that came with it.

Agree on the "Easy to navigate" part, but I find it poorly structured and organized.

Maybe so, I don't have anything to compare it to as none of my other AVRs had much in the way of GUI.

Have you though of where Denon, Sony, Pioneer and other manufacturers are? THEY'RE IN JAPAN! English isn't their first language and the people who proofread the manuals may not know anything about how they're used or how they work. You should try reading a manual from the '70s.

Denon receivers aren't particularly hard to operate but you do need to go through the setup menu before using it. The commands are ALL discreet, so you would have a really hard time screwing anything up once it's set up.

Just press buttons. You won't hurt anything and if it gets messed up, turn it off and on again. Worst case, do a hard reset. Actually, as soon as it comes out of the box, do a hard reset and THEN go into the setup menu.

This may help.http://batpigworld.com/
Does not matter where you put the hdmi in the back. Just write down which one 1,2,3, or 4, so you input the right device. They should not be named, just numbered...ignore the names of the inputs.

I must gloat. I don't have any problem with my UI:D

And there are plenty of people that can translate Japanese to english. They also could hire an English Tech writer too. And it wouldn't cost that much. Especially compared to the improvement.

The one good thing about Denon is that once you have it set up, it remembers all your settings and levels for each input and listening mode. Once it's set up, it's set up for good and it's easy to adjust on the fly. That input button on the back of the remote is your best friend. Make sure it's set to auto unless you want to use the m/c analog input for SACD.

Drdawg, you have to assign the HDMI input to the source selection you want to use in the HDMI input menu. It might help to scroll through the entire GUI menu and familiarize yourself with the selections. Once you are familiar with the menu, things make more sense. You will see what things have to be assigned and how you can manipulate the connections and settings.
