What is a good deal on speakers, and where do I find them?

Speakers would be pretty difficult. Subs are not.
Interesting.

I have 4 odd pairs of speakers down in the basement some of which have woofers of good size - I wonder if they could be made to work better?

ONLY $199 IF YOU ENTER THE COUPON CODE. I'm sure if the OP doesn't jump on this someone will. That's a crazy good deal.

So are the EMP/RBH speakers at the AHstore.

That would leave plenty in the budget for a subwoofer.

I think I would probably choose the EMPs, greater dynamic range. Having exact matching speakers all around would be excellent.

You are going to have to do some work. Take your fav cd and go shopping-shopping and shopping. Only then will you have a good idea what you want and how much it cost. Then cut out all the ones that were above your pocketbook and shop again. This forum is GREAT for a starting point but it is your hard earned money and your ears. A quick decision will leave you wanting in a short time believe me. Just remember if you buy quality (even a piece at a time) at a good price (don't be afraid of used) you can almost always get back most of what you spent from someone else that's in a hurry.:)

That would probably have to be the soundtrack to Gladiator.

Doing lot's of shopping - unfortunately most of it is on-line as the only local choices are big box stores and custom places that wont talk to you unless you're going to lay down $800-1200 ( or more ) for one speaker - definitely out of my price league, even at one piece at a time.

Where are you at? I live way out in the country 65 miles from Dallas. I did take a week off for va-ca loaded up the Head Honcho and drove to some places that I found on-line. Of course we had to do some sight seeing and have some nice dinners but what the hey?

Colo Spngs, with a 30 min limit to drive time due to health issues - Denver is an hour if you don't hit rush hour, and might be 2+ hrs if you do.

Edit: Given that the wife works and thinks that I'm only shopping for a TV, it would ruin the entire Christmas surprise if she knew that an entire HT is in the works.

Good news - due to a small change in the budget, I can put another $200-300 to the speakers.
