What is a good deal on speakers, and where do I find them?

So now you are going with Bookshelfs? If you are going that route, you will need a sub sooner rather than later. If this is the case, go with what the Tiger said and get the behringers and the Dayton sub. That would be much better than the Infinity.

I think my list is starting to narrow down.

What about the Infinity Primus line - any good ???

PSB just revamped their Image series line of speakers. Find a PSB dealer that is close to you and find out from him what deals you can get on the previous generation line...B15 or B25... Very solid performing speakers.
Just checked - the local dealer already moved his entire stock, in anticipation of the change.

If you check near the bottom of the link I gave for the Primus, you would see some towers in that line - that is what I was eyeballing.

That being said, the CMT-340's are also on that short list - and near the top. What sub would you match up with them?

My belief on subs is -you can't go too much. I would never buy a cheap sub as it has to fill the entire volume of your room unlike a speaker that just needs enough headroom.

For now, I would go with a sub120 and see how you like it. If you get addicted to this game then look at SVS or DIY.

This is my sub, I upgraded from a $2500 Paradigm Servo15 to a home made job.

Here is my Servo on top of my DIY sub, the DIY was wearing out the Servo as it couldn't keep up so I got rid of it.

What about placement? I see that yours are tucked in nice and tight and on wood floors - is carpeting going to matter?

Sub placement is one of the most important things. Like I said in the other thread, we all live in the real world and have to do what works for us. I have no other place for my sub so it is where it is. I use a SMS-1 for control so I have it pretty dialed in besides a suck-out right at my cross-over point.

Carpet is much better than hardwoods for speakers and subs.

Just a little 15" AXIS driver and a box. Wait until you see my next box that Chris designed. Let's just say it's a tad bigger and ported.

What kind of DIY job is that??? The Servo is one fine sub!

We need to get you into the LMS :)

Then I can save you from the problems the Axis brings.:D

Seriously, I can't wait to hear that thing.

You need to buy my sealed box so I can afford to build my ported.

LOL. Maybe I would if it weren't made with 5 ply!:p

I can't buy stuff anymore without permission. I got a ring now. :)

And I just bought a workmate wm125 without permission. So I'm gonna get it for that already.

Right here on Audioholics

I have been looking on e-bay, trying to find some Polk Monitor series to build a surround system on, but from what I'm seeing, I just don't know what a good price is - for that matter from what I'm seeing, I admit to being more than just a little intimidated by the prices I'm seeing even on e-bay.

What are good prices for speakers ( especially sets for a surround system ), and where am I going to find them ?

One of the best deals I've ever seen, having been in the industry for 25+ years is teh EMP 5 speaker package for $200 in the Audioholics store. Due to a lack of the EMP drivers, RBH has been using their RBH TK Series cones in them makign them almost the same as the much higher end RBH TK series.

I've sold the equivalents from RBH for over $1500.00 a set of 5, at $40 each it makes them seem like cheap speakers ut they aren't they are high quality speakers, that IMHO and the opinions of many others, will walk all over Polk at more than three times the price. POlk has gon eto crap pver the last decade, hey are not the old SRS speakers of the 80's they are mainly just cheapo big box retail junk now.

Check this deal out for size, http://store.audioholics.com/product/2767/0/emp-ef30c-5-0-lcr-bookshelf-speaker-system/afaeb0200ccd488ff9e3627a765ecb51 you simply CANNOT beat it right now, IF they have any left. A few friends in the US just bought a set each and paid around $220.00 SHIPPED TO THEIR DOOR!! The price of ONE RBH TK-515!

SDA not SRS :) Yes, I do believe they are too "mainstream" today and the SDAs were the last really good speakers they made.
