What exactly is a "mechanical assembly" in a DVD player?

I just got my Denon DVD1930 back from the shop and the bill says "replaced mechanical assembly". Is that the whole transport mechanism with the optics attached?

Is it this?

Something else?

The mechanical assembly would be the part that moves the disc over top of the spindle so it can be spun so the laser can read it. The optical lense and laser are fixed in position and do not move.

OK I found a slightly different unit on another page and this looks like what you describe. It actually looks like the drawer and it's rails and gears.

The player was freezing on SACD's only. I don't see why this would make it do that.

I'm sure Seth meant 'conspiracy' in the sense of 'charge the highest fee possible regardless of the real problem'.

I don't know the cost of various replacement parts but in general it is not cost effective to repair a player because it will cost nearly as much as buying a new one.

Well, On a fixed position On the sled, which does move. If you want to get technical. The laser optics also move up and down on a miniature voice coil to focus.

What they replaced was probably the entire transport mechanism which contains the drawer, drawer motor, the laser head, sled rails etc. Seems like the correct price from a manufacturers facility.

I just got the unit as a B-stock/Refurb with a factory 90 day warranty so it was all covered. The bill actually says, "replace part# 9H26000755 - mech assy, reseat cables, realign drawer, relube all, clean and test."

I only had time today to listen to one SACD all the way through and it didn't freeze once! So I guess it's fixed. I think it might even sound a little better.
