Hello,
I'm new to this forum and was looking for a bit of advise re the driver in the attached photos.
I was gifted a homemade speaker unit from a musician friend who's uncle had built this himself some years ago. I'm assuming the model number is Westrex 3013 - C or 3015 - C but not sure as I can't seem to find any information on such models. Does anyone have any idea as to the details and what the actual model number is?

Many thanks

Seriously, I have no life.
The manufacturer is Goodmans in UK. You could try contacting them: www.goodmans.co.uk

Most likely the driver in question is an old PA product and definitely not compatible with high fidelity reproduction whatsoever.
Goodmans are long gone. The owners family could not pay the death duties, and the company was sold, trashed and disappeared. Another victim of mindless socialism.

Well, that explains why we cannot access the published website address.

Death duties? Never heard of such....got a link? Lots of other reasons for families to fail, tho.

What makes you think those Westrex drivers were made by Goodmans? I can find no evidence of this. Further I know that company pretty well. Ted Jordan was their chief engineer, and Leslie Watts was their accountant. After the death tax debacle, Ted and Leslie formed the Jordan Watts speaker company, with which I was closely associated.

Goodmans were based in Norwood South London. The produced Hi-Fi speakers, and also cheaper lines for manufacturers of portable record players radios and voice PA and background music systems.

Westrex were a UK subsidiary of the Western Electric company. This is what is known of them.

I would doubt there is any information extant on the drivers the OP has. I would think those drivers are only of historic interest and of no use in any current audio system.

In the UK there is no pass through of assets after death, and taxes are onerous, especially back then. Many good businesses were ruined by this. The owners wife was highly distraught at having to sell the company to raise the funds due to the UK Internal revenue service at the time. Ted Jordan and Leslie Watts found themselves unemployed after the death of the owner.

I know this from personal knowledge and contacts of the parties involved. That is exactly what happened.

That is what I had found listed on eBay and it's seems to be a genuine Goodmans driver. However, I didn't look for any confirmation of Westrex being related to that company. I strongly doubt that connection:

That is an early Goodmans Axiette. However, after Ted Jordan became their engineer it quickly became a very different and much better driver. That poster is mistaken. Westrex had no connection with that driver.

I used that speaker in some of my early builds.

Thanks for the pictures. That horn loaded HF unit is Westrex. However we don't know that the woofer is, as you say this was a home made speaker.

Now there is a transistor amp in that enclosure, and that is obviously later than those drivers. At one time the speaker had a back on it. However when the speaker was modified it was no longer possible to put the back on, as there are terminals in the way, and the back would have covered those power transistors in the amp. The speaker has RCA and 1/4" phono connectors.

It is hard to know what to make of all this. I suspect the speaker was later modified to be used as an instrument speaker, most likely a guitar amp.

I would certainly not try and put it to use now.

Whether any components have any value, I can not say. I doubt they do. The only way to find out would be to "test the market."

I have several westrex 30150 units, which are permanent magnet versions of the famous western electric 555 driver, and are very valuable. Inside the cabinet there is an original westrex crossover, between the bass and treble, and the bass is a goodmans unit. It would be easy to connect direct to the crossover via the solder tag strip at the top using IN and C, rather than trying to resurect the amplifier that has a label describing the power transistors as kaput. Probably best to put the back back on it to use.

Westrex did use drive units manufactured by Goodmans and Celestion, giving them their own catalogue numbers and sold them into the cinema distribution business. Westrex also made valve amplifiers for Vox.

Hi pde2000 - Thanks for the contributing info.

I was thinking of selling the Westrex 30150 and repurposing the cone for a bass practice amp.
Would you be interested in the 30150 or know who would?

Many thanks

And, to think that they could have reinstalled the back if they had drilled a hole for passing the wires through from the jacks......

Where in the world do you live? The whole speaker is interesting as it is. A british version of we753. The people on audioheritage are the best bet for advice but this sort of thing sells pretty well over here in England.

I wouldn't use the goodmans for a guitar speaker, although it would sound good for sure. I have a pair of Celestion G12, one being a westrex branded 30928 and they were used by Vox in their guitar cabinets but I use them as full range vintage speakers in a pair of old wharfedale cabinets. The Goodmans is a similar spec. If you do use it for guitar it would have to be with a fairly low power amplifier.

Hi pde2000

After much deliberation, I have decided to sell the Westrex 30150.
However, being quite alien to this market, I was wandering if you could recommend the best place to sell this item and what in your opinion is a reasonable asking price?

Many thanks
