I got a Ritchie Valens LP, from like 1958/59, i played it today, it's got quite a bit of noticeable crackling, no skips, but like static-y sounds, how do i get rid of that? or reduce it as much as possible.

please note i just got a record player and played one for the first time today, and it took me 4 hrs to figure out there was a speed adjustment at the bottom of the player  so be kind, and be specific

Thnx  :D

Basically, vinyl (especially old records, even though they look new) is loaded with clicks and pops. Throw in a few skips for good measure and you get to enjoy vinyl.

There is very little you can do to get rid of those surface noises. You might try cleaning the disk with a cleaning solution. Even a mild dish washing detergent will work. I have many vinyl records in my collection (I bought vinyl ever since the 1950's) that look like brand new but are loaded with noise and distortion. About all I can attribute to this is that the vinyl itself is decomposing and causing problems.

that's very strange because i have another vinyl, (Hank Locklin) it's labelled 1960, looks new, and sounds new! no crackling, no distortion, crystal clear.

It All Depends

It all depends greatly on how good the original chemicals were that the vinyl was composed of when they made the record. I have many records that are well over 40 years old and are excellent, others are not.

Vinyl does decompose with age.

There are some vinyl cleaners that may get some of the dirt and dust that may have accumulated on the disc over time. May want to look through a magnifying lens to see what is there?
Change to CD?:D

Clean up the vinyl as best you can and then record it to the harddrive on your computer. Then you have umpteen ways to clean up the recording before burning to CD so you can preserve the music for a lot longer than vinyl will last.

haha i already have the music on my computer, i can just download it anyways...

i just bought the vinyl like a few days ago, they were not mine originally, it's more than twice as old as me, i just wanted some vinyls to play back, i heard about "Permostat" which gets rid of the crackling, its apparently quite expensive, like 20 UK pounds for a bottle which cleans 25 LP's to a very good condition. anyone heard about it?

just doing some more googl-ing on how to clear up all that static, what has been recommended by many people are "antistatic" guns made for removing static off records of surfactants which are chemicals that help remove the static, will this reduce the crackling at least?
