Vintage Room Set up

Hello all,

I am starting a vintage room set up. Over the last couple of months I have purchased a turntable (Technics SL-1500), 8 Track Player (Akai), CD Player (Denon), and just purchased Bose 601 Series II ($100) which were professionally refoamed 2 months ago.

I am looking at now completing this set and removing the old vintage gear off of my 7.1 Denon receiver and making a vintage room in a about a 12x13 room.

I am looking for a receiver that would match these speakers... anyone know about the receivers I am looking at that would match well:

Marantz 2285B, 2275, 2270, 2252, or 2230.

Pioneer SX 950, 1050, 980, or 1080.

Sansui 9090 DB, 8080 DB or 7070.

So what do you think? Or any other make and manufacturer.

Let me know if anyone here knows about this vintage gear... newbie to vintage gear.

Thanks!

Any of those receivers should be fine, if they are in good working order.

I like the idea of a vintage room, but can't you find some better speakers then Bose 601? They have to close to the top of the list for the worst speakers ever!

yes, get some better speakers like some old KEF's, Cerwin Vega, JBL, Sansui, Marantz Imperials, Daulquist, Rogers, etc.

Speakers are good for now

Hello all,

I like the 601 series II. Sound very good. Very clear, very full and good for the small room. I am not just saying that I like these speakers and I am not a Bose fan either. From what you can see these are the first Bose speakers that I have owned.

I listened to the Sansui SP3500 speakers, along with a couple of Epi's, and some JBL (can not remember the number), also listened to Infinity Reference Six speakers, but narrowed them down to the 3500's and 601's and really liked the 601 sound. I thought it was very full and clear. All the speakers were listened to in the same room, with the same Receiver (Marantz 2265B). So comparing in the same environment.

After I get this set up... maybe in a year or 2 I will be looking at some of the Big Sansui's I think the 8900, but for right now I am happy with what I have. I listened to 601 Series 4 and those sucked but the II was great sounding. Again, want to say I am not a Bose fan either. I am more of a JBL/Infinity fan. I have upgraded my surround room with 2 sets of IL40's 1 set of IL10's, and IL36C Center. Sounds GREAT!

So thanks for the comments except the ones saying the 601's suck... really I do like them. I had a chance to buy more but choose to do the 601's. Even sounded good with my Denon 3808 receiver. Will sound better with vintage receiver can not wait.

Thanks!

I had a colleague by a set of those 601s. That is when I first realized Dr Amar Bose was setting out on a career of pulling the proverbial wool over the eyes of the public. I'm sorry to have to tell you, but the drivers in those speakers, were very cheap and nasty Far Eastern jobs, that could be bought for $1.70 a piece. Things never improved from that quarter!
