The energy is only a 10" sub vs. 15" for the velo. I dont think it would fill my 4000 sq ft room as well. Also, the energy weighs 34 lbs, the velo over 80 lbs.
heres an idea.

Take all the specs and papers about the speaker away from your face, and listen to it.

I compared them directly, as in the same room at the same time, hit a button and the other one turns on. The Energy is a far nicer sounding subwoofer IMO.

i've found a good compromise between these 2 subs. best of both worlds.

i need "kick in the chest" bass.
i need lots of wattage.

therefore, im gonna buy a CHT15-R (class D amp)

i had a choice between a DD-10 and a CHT12-R/CHT15-R
but Curt of Velodyne suggested I go for the CHT series simply because of the size of my room (2600cu.ft.)

the next audio component i buy will be a DD-15 (even if its the last thing i buy!)

Sweet. When you get the 15R, or if you have it already... PICS!!

The Digital Drives are very sexy looking subwoofers. I havent heard one yet, but I can if I go to the right place.

One thing you will notice with the 15R, is it keeps up with speakers. It's never left behind if you know what I mean.

the distributor promised me end of november or 1st week of december :)
pictures will of course follow! (perhaps a review also)

hopefully in 2 years i can afford the DD! based on the reviews i've read (and personal opinions) the DD will trump ANY subwoofer, they say its the BEST subwoofer (actually the DD18) but the 15 is close enough. :)

but after 2 years, it might be called DD-15R!

Or it might not even exist! Obviously replaced with something much better. A DD with a remote is the ultimate in subwoofer performance. :)

actually, the DD already has a remote (i think)

but they say the difference between a CHT and a CHT-R is already big (even without the remote)

the wait is driving me nuts! its only been a few days too! the 12" is available right away and its becoming increasingly tempting.

They don't, I wish they did.

The CHT-R and DLSR series subs are way better then there older selves. The cosmetics and cabintes on the new ones is much better IMO. I think the drivers are a little beefier then before also.

Yes, The DD series has a remote which is used for adjusting (in real-time with on-screen Fq sweep using supplied mike) the parametric Eq, servo sampling rate, DPS modes. This allows you to integrate the sub with any system and get the flattest baseline in almost any room.

One of the best things about the DD series is that the software that runs it can be updated and improved and since it was first introduced there have been about 3 updates, the last being:

-Auto-EQ and self-EQ modes are provided for quick setup
-Individual EQ curves can be customized for each DSP preset
-Defeatable low-pass crossover

The next updated should be released soon which from what I've heard among other improvements they've made some changes to the servo-control and improved bass extension(as if being flat to 15Hz isn't good enough:D )

Just remember that these DD's have about the lowest distortion figures in the subwoofer industry(which is why many owners of electrostatics use them). If anyone is interested here is an interview with Bruce Hall(President of Velodyne) about subwoofers in general and the technology in the DD series.

Anyway, enough rambling
cheers:)

in an empty room of 2600cu.ft.:

would the addition of furniture (couches) add or subtract to the performance of a subwoofer?

by adding furniture, you are effectively reducing the volume of the room
BUT
you might/maybe also be reducing the room gain? because of the "absorbent" nature of the couches?

I tell you what, everytime I think I have an idea of what sub I want to get, I go and read another post and start wondering again....I think I am going to pick on and never read a post again:p , or not....jsut thought I would whine a bit....and I am curious as well...

I seem to have the knack of asking the very ignorable and/or unanswerable questions around here. :)

kinda shows i have nothing better to do.

Furniture usually only affects treble/midrange. Bass goes right through it.

Putting in some furniture couldn't hurt the other sound. Help absorb some reflections and excess treble/midrange.

Also, try a rug or some DIY absorbers to help deaden your room.

blast the local velodyne distributor. first they tell me first week of december. now third week of december (sometimes hinting february).

which leaves me seriously contemplating
dual CHT12-R's
a single sunfire true eq signature sub
a single DD-10

for the people who understand the technical stuff of the low freq. extension,

will two 12's extend lower than a 15? or at least minimize distortion because each of them doesnt have to work as much to produce the lower frequencies.

am I right to assume that whatever the rated low freq. range of a sub, it still TRIES to produce frequencies lower than the rated freq.? (albeit with distortion)

They MAY not have the same low end extension, but they will double in volume, and sound MUCH better.

I have run dual subs in my system and the sound is much better. They are much harder to localize, and the added output is great for movies.

I think 2 CHTR 12R's would be a killer subwoofer setup. If I had that, I probly wouldn't upgrade for along time to come.

so what's an air fryer? you want to put a subwoofer off the floor (speaker stand height) and at the back?

sheep, but i have to mention that i cannot do what you did (one in front, on in the back)

i will have to do this:
left speaker - sub - tv - sub - right speaker

if i get the 15-r:
left speaker - space - tv - space - right speaker - sub
