I'm a longstanding Vandersteen fan. They are great speakers for the money. If they have a weakness it is soft highs and the fact that they need lots of watts to drive them but for the money, I can't think of any better speaker. They are quite neutral and don't have much of a characteristic Vandersteen sound, but after you listen to other speakers in the same price range, you find that they all have some sort of "feature" to their sound that V's lack. With more listening you realize that the "features" are mainly weaknesses.

Yep, I would say that they are. My dad recently picked up a pair of 2CE Signatures and I'm very impressed. We listened to other speakers during his auditioning that were priced at $2k-$4k the Vandersteen speakers beat them all hands down, in every department. Neutrality, flat response, good range, good imaging, etc. As for needing a ton of power, my dad is driving his with a B&K Components ST-202+ and it's more than enough power. Getting anywhere near halfway up (it is a small room) is insane, 25% volume is usually plenty. I think that you'll find after auditioning that it's hard (perhaps even impossible) to beat the 2CE signature for value anywhere in the high-end market, even internet direct. Yes, I do feel that strongly about these speakers.

As a veteran audiophile, I make mention of the fact that you need to LISTEN to Vandy's before you buy them. I have never cared for the sound of Vandersteen, but this is of course my opinion. Don't let the media and marketing sway you - GO LISTEN.
This example came forth as I grudgingly re-listened to some Paradigm Studio 100's again. Having heard all the revisions, v2, v3, v4 - and again yesterday -- all I can hear is a VERY noisy cabinet and sonic smearing. Yet they sell like hotcakes and have some favorable stereo magazine reviews. If the Vandy's don't sound right to you, keep auditioning.

That advice is true for any speaker. It's really hard for moderately priced speakers that you see in places like Best Buy because it's such a horrid sonic environment.
