Are there any DVDs that will upconvert through component video? My LCD had HDMI but my reciever does not. Is there anyway around this? Thanks.

Most DVDs contain copy protection flags (not sure if it is always macrovision but I think it is most of the time). DVD players should not upconvert over Component if these flags are found on the disc (or they may not upconvert over component regardless of copy protection). I believe some of the older players had "hacks" that would let you configure the player to ignore the copy protection.

I do know that at least some discs do not have copy protection because the first DVD I tried when I setup my HTPC did not have it (just by dumb luck). I can't remember which disc that was. If you're using a HTPC, software exists that can strip the copy protection flags.

I couldn't find a great resource for lists of discs without copy protection. Since so few discs are copy protection-free, I'm not sure it even matters (do you plan on enabling it for the few discs you can?). I guess it could be useful for testing purporses. This UK site has a few region 1 DVDs listed with a "Macrovision" field (Yes/No) but I can't confirm it is accurate.

Some that appear to not have macrovision are:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Austin Powers Goldmember
The Royal Tenenbaums
Training Day

I also saw somewhere that Superbit movies, at least the earlier released movies, did not have macrovision.

I would just find an alternative to hooking up your DVD player through your receiver.

Seriously, I have no life.

Send the HDMI from the DVD player to the TV direct and audio to the receiver by digital connection.

Exactly what he said. My TV only has DVI for digital input and my receiver is non-HDMI. I run an HDMI/DVI cable from the DVD and digital coax to the recevier. Works great. Yes, you lose the direct switching ability with your receiver and have to switch inputs on the TV itself, but that's more nuisance than problem and fixable with a future receiver upgrade! :D
