Upcoming Audioholics Reviews!

A small feedback and I dont mean to burn bridges or start flame wars.
IMHO it will be nice for future reviews if the rating system was changed so that the pure overall performance rating of the component was kept fully independent of the overal price/value rating. It is really difficult (impossible?) to look at a $500 component and $1500 component both get 4 stars for performance and wonder which one truly is better.

For instance i recently came across enjoythemusic.com which follows such a system. Reviewed components are always rated relative to the absolute best of breed. Readers should be able to then much more easily equate the price with the performace and derive their own notion of "value".

I understand the desire for this, but we don't agree with that method at all. If you do not group according to price and value then you truly have no comparison. No one I know shops by absolute value, they first determine how much they can afford to spend.

An absolute rating scale is almost never a good idea because it's valid only for someone who has infinite funds and distorts the value of products that perform well in their price class but cannot compete against more expensive or flagship products.

One thing you will see us do in the future is slightly modify our rating scale, stop giving out half-stars, and reserve 5-star ratings for products that "kick-out" in a particular category to something that should cost a bit more. These 5-star marks are the ones that typically indicate a product competes with the next pricing category.

Now if we mainly reviewed esoteric audio products, we could probably go with a fixed scale, but since our speaker systems range from $200 - $50,000 that's going to be very difficult... We'd need a 100-point scale, and there is no way to accurately quantify to that resolution since it's a subjective rating.

Completed and/or awaiting peer:

- Denon DVD-3930CI
- Yamaha YSP-1100
- Olevia 542i LCD TV
- VidaBox Slim Media Center

This week the Optoma HD81 review should be completed and sent in for peer review...

ok. that might be of some help. also it would be helpful if it was made clearer as to what exactly defines the specific group in which it is placed.

One other thing is that I often read in review after review (not just on this site) espcially dealing with speakers and subs is that they very routinely say things like

- ".. such great ... at this price point ..." or
- "I have heard many much more expensive speakers that are unable to deliver such good ..." or
- "it beats speakers many times the price"

Unfortunately :) the names of these these more expensive systems with which comparison is being made is never mentioned. Neither can you find a reivew (unless its got to do with Bose) which says that its level of performance can be obtained at much lower priced speakers.

And to make things worse sometimes such "high value" statements are made even for speakers costing $15,000 and up !

Just seems to make it extremely difficult to separate the grain from the chaff by reading a review.

Regardless, I appreciate the effort you folks put into these reviews.

Just wondering if Audioholics was planning on reviewing any of these 1080p LCD HDTV's in the near future?

Sharp Aquos 42" 1080p LCD HDTV Model #LC-42D62U

Samsung 40" 1080p LCD HDTV Model #LN-S4095D

Sony Bravia XBR 40" 1080p LCD HDTV Model #KDL40XBR2

My Philip's LCD HDTV I purchased from Best Buy one year ago has had numerous problems and now it needs a new panel because of dead pixels. I am assuming this time there going to tell me I can exchange this TV for a new one of my choice because I bought the extended warranty. All three of these TV's are around the same price so I want to know which one I should get.

BTW, when is that Yamaha 2700 review coming out? :p

About the rating scale...have you considered moving it to a 1-10 system? Just so that it would be easier to differentiate products? (Didn't read the whole thread so perhaps this was discussed earlier).

Hey guys! It seems to me you have not reviewed much in the way of video processors. (Like DVDO and such.) Any plans to review this kind of stuff?

Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the new website!

what are the chances of a review of a Dayton TITANIC subwoofer?
TITANIC's get recomended now and then, and I'm curious to see how thay perform on a bench test, and what professionals have to say about them.
