According to this (very) unconfirmed report, Trump has signaled that he will continue military aid to Ukraine.

>>>Donald Trump’s team has told European officials that the incoming US president will demand Nato member states increase defence spending to 5 per cent of GDP, but plans to continue supplying military aid to Ukraine.<<<

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

>>>The Finnish authorities on Thursday boarded an oil tanker that they believe was involved in cutting through vital undersea cables, and was part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of ships aimed at bypassing sanctions. . . .

A number of other vital undersea cables have been cut in recent months, raising fears that Russia might be waging a shadow campaign against NATO nations that have supported Ukraine in the face of Moscow’s full-scale invasion.<<<

This isn't too surprising:

>>>The Eagle S – a tanker ship carrying Russian oil and suspected of severing the Estlink 2 power cable running under the Baltic Sea between Finland and Estonia – was reportedly brimming with spy equipment. The cable incident is the latest in a series of such events in this strategically important region as tensions with Russia have mounted in the wake of its war on Ukraine.

After being seized by Finnish Police, the Eagle S was found to be “kitted out with special transmitting and receiving devices that were used to monitor naval activity, according to a source with direct involvement in the ship,” Lloyds List reported. That equipment “effectively allowed it to become a ‘spy ship’ for Russia.”<<<

It's an unconfirmed report, but it seems plausible.

Very plausible as Russia is not an honest country when it comes to spying. And it gives them a cover over the long run until they are caught.
Now they need to go after all those ships.

Could be an early warning of what Russia is planning, an attempt to invade Finland? Or a payback for joining NATO?

More evidence the Eagle S broke the power line by dragging it's anchor:

>>>OSLO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Finnish police said on Sunday they had found tracks that drag on for dozens of kilometres along the bottom of the Baltic Sea where a tanker carrying Russian oil is suspected of breaking a power line and four telecoms cables with its anchor. . . . Finnish police suspect the Eagle S caused the damage by dragging its anchor along the seabed.
Investigators have identified a "dragging track" but have yet to find a missing anchor, Sami Paila, tactical leader and detective chief inspector of Finland's National Bureau of Investigation, said in a statement.

"The track is dozens of kilometres in length," Paila said.

Photos taken of the Eagle S on Friday showed the vessel missing its port side anchor.<<<

Ukraine will not renew contracts of Russian gas transiting through Ukrainian pipelines. These where contracts agreed upon in 2019.

Pipeline Russian gas imports to Europe was over 40% in 2021 and about 8% [edit: fix typo] in 2023.

>>>Ukraine has made good on its promise to halt the transport of Russian gas to Europe through its territory after a key deal with Moscow expired on Wednesday.

Ukraine’s refusal to renew the transit deal was an expected but symbolic move after nearly three years of its full-scale war with Russia, and comes after Europe has already drastically cut Moscow’s share of its gas imports. Ukraine’s energy ministry said it ended the deal “in the interests of national security.”

“We have stopped the transit of Russian gas. This is a historic event,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that its gas transportation infrastructure had been prepared in advance of the expiration.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the move “one of Moscow’s greatest defeats.” In a Telegram post Wednesday, he accused Moscow of “turning energy into a weapon and engaging in cynical energy blackmail against its partners” and expressed hope that the United States would increase its supply of gas to Europe.
...
The lapsed deal had represented about 5% of the European Union’s total gas imports, according to Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, and supplied mainly Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. Now, after its expiry, Europe receives pipeline gas from Russia via a single route: The Turkstream pipeline, which runs through Turkey and on to Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, says Bruegel.
...
Before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia was the European Union’s biggest supplier of natural gas. The bloc has whittled Russia’s share of its pipeline gas imports down from over 40% in 2021 to about 8% in 2023, according to the European Council.

To fill the gap, Europe has imported vast quantities of liquefied natural gas (LNG) — a chilled, liquid form of natural gas that can be transported via sea tankers — from the United States and other countries, as well as pipeline gas from Norway. The EU has also ramped up imports of Russian LNG to help heat its homes and power its factories, but faces a self-imposed deadline of 2027 and plans to break its dependence on all Russian fossil fuels. ...<<<

Just know there's a LNG tanker (named Mulan) suspiciously zigzagging slowly (12 km/h) over an optical fibre cable from Norway passing Denmark to the continent. Article is published by the public service channel TV2.

The ship is registered in Panama and is on an US sanction list as operating as a Russian ship.

Yeah, highly suspicious.

I'm not sure I understand Putin's motives. My initial impression is that he's testing the resolve of NATO countries, but it seems as if sabotage could motivate NATO countries to build up their militaries and increase support to Ukraine. A lot of what Putin does just seems dumb to me.

Given that you're a lot closer to this, I suspect your insight is better than mine.

At then end of 2024 Ukraine attacked using a combined arms assault with only drones. All the drones were made in Ukraine.

It's an action reminiscent of the asymmetric tactics used by terrorist or insurgent forces against a more powerful opponent. If taken at that level it demonstrates the weakness of Russia. As these ships are often registered through opaque lines of ownership, the West should just sink one and see if Putin squeaks. Plausible deniability also has its drawbacks.

YouTube algorithm has been feeding me a steady stream of combat footage from Ukraine. What a transformation of the battlefield just from 15-20yrs ago, mostly from the small combat drone introduction.

From the start of the invasion to now, the progress of the BFV and Abrams crews is pretty remarkable. The HIMARS system is also terrifyingly awesome!

A prelude to a conflict with NATO or an individual country, Finland? Cut as many communications lines as possible beforehand?

Your guess is as good as mine. Offhand I doubt that cutting a few communications lines would seriously impact the military capabilities of the NATO countries in the region, but that's just a guess on my part.

The UK has been watching a Russian spy ship very closely.

>>>The Royal Navy has been monitoring a Russian spy ship after it was spotted around UK waters earlier this week, the defence secretary has told MPs.
John Healey said the vessel, Yantar, was used for gathering intelligence and mapping the UK's critical underwater infrastructure.
He said the incident was "another example of growing Russian aggression".
Healey added: "I also wanted President [Vladimir] Putin to hear this message: we see you, we know what you're doing and we will not shy away from robust action to protect this country." . . .

He said a Royal Navy submarine had been authorised to surface close to Yantar - a highly unusual move.

Healey described this "strictly as a deterrent measure" and "to make clear that we have been covertly monitoring its every move". Defence sources told the BBC the ship was also given a verbal warning. "The ship then left UK waters without further loitering and sailed down to the Mediterranean," Healey added.<<<

Having a sub surface right next to the Russian spy ship was a nice touch (and apparently effective).

>>>Interestingly, Healey disclosed that a Royal Navy submarine was among the assets tasked with shadowing the Yantar when it was in British waters back in November. The defense secretary said that warships and patrol aircraft were also involved in tracking the Russian vessel.

At one point, the submarine surfaced close to the Yantar “to make clear that we had been covertly monitoring its every move,” he said.

The submarine wasn’t named but will have been one of the five currently active Astute class attack submarines.<<<

From the twz.com article, the Netherlands has been actively monitoring the area as well.

>>>In the Baltic Sea alone, cables have been damaged on three occasions, with all of them carrying at least some of the hallmarks of sabotage. In the most prominent event, on Dec. 25, an oil tanker dragging its anchor, damaging a power cable running between Finland and Estonia. This led to NATO launching Baltic Sentry, a mission intended to ensure the security of critical undersea infrastructure in the region. As you can read about here, the mission now also involves Dutch F-35A stealth fighters and it will soon add at <<<

The videos of drones with shotguns hunting down Russian drones are interesting.

>>>Drone combat footage released by Ukrainian sources showcases a drone armed with shotguns hunting for Russian drone systems. At one point in the footage, the pilot even finds a Russian Soldier and attempts to targets him with the drone's mounted weapon systems as well.<<<

This video below has nothing to do with Russia/Ukraine but I thought it was too cool not to share:

>>>St. Elmo's Fire Dances On USAF Warbirds

This footage, courtesy of the US Air Force and CENTCOM, shows a KC-135 Stratotanker providing mid-air refueling to an F-15 Eagle in inclement weather on 05 January, 2025. The electric field in the atmosphere causes St. Elmo's Fire to dance on the leading edges and points of both aircraft. While this is far from the only time this has occurred and indicates no danger to the aircraft, it still looks undeniably cool.

St. Elmo's Fire (also, witchfire) is the colloquial name for the visible plasma of a corona discharge between the atmosphere and rod-like objects. Historically, it has been seen in ships' masts, church spires and other towering objects. In maritime tradition, it is considered a good omen, as for obvious reasons it gives some warning that lightning strikes are likely.<<<
