S1 and have it calibrated.

But consider this, is your couch against the back wall? You may want to be a hair smaller and move the couch forward. This would be a better option in regards to sound quality.

FYI, I have a 65" and sit 11 feet away and it is by no means to larger. For your distance, you will get use to a 58" in a couple of hours.

No, the couch will be in middle of the room since its 25' long room with open space behind it.

I remeasured and my couch will probably be about 11" away from the TV. But I could go back as far as 13' if I wanted. So I think the 58" will work nicely in there.

Looks like its the 58" S1 for me.

HH Gregg was able to match the Panasonic Company discount of $1342 and it's in stock. Now I have to try and fit the box in my Honda Element. I have about 40 1/8" height and the box according to Panny is 40.1"
so I will be pushing it lol
I might need to pursuade it in there.
congrats and enjoy

Yup. As many already mentioned, the 58" is about perfect for the distance.

Congrats. :)

11" away from the TV? Maybe 5.8" would be better than 58".

;)

Looks like the deal fell through on the 58" panny. They were sold out by the time we ordered.

Looks like I've narrowed it down to 3 choices:

Panasonic TC-P50G10 (2009 model) Best Buy - $1299
Panasonic TC-P50S2 (2010 model) Costcentral.com - $1124
Samsung PN50B650 - Dell $1139

Consumer report had the Samsung ranked #1 last year in 50" models and the G10 was ranked 2nd so I don't think either will do me wrong. Just wanted to see what you guys all thought.

Consumer Reports is absolutely worthless. Never, ever listen to them.

I don't know anything about the S2 specifically, but I'd be inclined to keep my $175 and get it over the G10, unless it's a downgrade from the S1.

Here are the only differences I can tell between the S1 and the new S2 model:

Retail price:
S1-$1399
S2-$1299

Contrast Radio:
S1 -Infinite Black Native: 40,000:1
S2 -Native: 2,000,000:1

Progressive scan
S1-Yes
S2-n/a

x.v. color (no clue what this is)
S1-no
S2-yes

Power consumption
S1-584w
S2-353w

And the S2 is about 5lbs lighter.
Seems a little odd.

But anyway I don't see any major differences.

Shop Dealnews.

I just caught the Samsung UN46B8500 on dealnews for $1475 shipped. They had the 46" 750 for $1,001. The store has since sold out but dealnews has these type deals often.

I have an XBR 9 qnd a samsung LN40B750. The Samsung 650, 750 and 8500 have incredible pictures. So does the Panny. I wouldn't buy anything else in your range. Check dealnews and have a little patience and you may save a ton of $$$ and get a superior display.

Isnt the P50U1 pretty much the same TV as the Panasonic S1 ?

No, they have different panels. The S1 is better than the U1.

Finally decided on a TV.

I left for Best Buy will all intentions of getting a Panny TC-P50S2. However there price was full $1299 retail. And I remember their Customer Service Dept saying they won't match net pricing. So no way was I paying that when online it can be had for $1039.

So I went over to HH Gregg next door to see if they had any Panny's in stock. All out of 2009's and they said they were still in price negotiations with Panny on the 2010's. So it could be up to 2 months before a single unit comes in if at all if they don't get the price they want from Panny. So to make up for not having any in stock they gave me the Samsung PN58B550 for $1350 (original sales price was $1869). Cheapest I found online was $1500 so I feel I got a pretty nice set for a decent amount.

It will be a week or so before I hook it up to see how it looks.
I checked today and it wasn't a buzzer thankfully.

With my $1300 budget, I don't think I could get much more TV for the money

On a somewhat related topic, is there any reason the 58" S1 would have a worse picture than the 50" S1? I imagine it's just the settings at Best Buy, but I'm recommending the former to my brother and want to steer him right.

Is there anything else he should be considering in that approximate price/size range if his primary concerns are overall PQ and black levels/shadow detail?
