TV Stands/Entertainment Centers

I am looking for a fairly wide (~6') stand to keep all of my components and center speaker in and to temporarily hold a LCD rear projection television while I save up for a front projector. I want something about 2' tall and it needs to hold a pretty large center channel speaker as well as several components (seperates, BD Player, PS3, Wii, DVR, etc...) and miscellaneous remotes, game controllers, DVDs, etc... I like some of the offerings from Standout Designs (Horizon N-702 in particular) but just don't have the extra funds to spend on one of their products at this time. I would really like to build one myself but I am not sure if I have the time to do that. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice quality wood television cabinet? Ideally it would go well with our house which is modern craftsment and would be in the $500-600 range. Just looking for ideas as I still am leaning towards building my own, but if I could find the right piece for the right price I would probably snatch it up.

Thanks,

Matt

You probably won't find anything solid wood at that price, barring a really great sale. If you have an IKEA near you they have some nice looking modern av orientated stuff. Yes a good chunk of their stuff is cheap crap that will fail apart in a couple of years, but they do have some good stuff too.
I've resigned myself to building my own since they only things I can find that are attractive and functional are 1500+.

Thanks for the reply. I too am starting to resign myself to building my own. I figured I can buy the materials to build an all hardwood unit for around $500-600 and if I can use some plywood in there it would be even less. I've looked at Ikea and can't really find anything I like there. I am pretty specific as to what I want so building my own is probably my best option anyway. Still, if I could find a spectacular deal I could make a few small compromises.

I'm using this: *Doh* can't post links yet

Hard to see, but it holds all this easily:
DirecTV HD-DVR
PS3
Xbox 360
Onkyo 906NR Receiver
Center Speaker (about 8" high, 18" wide, 12" deep when horizontal)
Pioneer Kuro Elite 60"

The center speaker is in the middle shelf (TV is on top) in between the PS3 and the DVR.

I have the Plateau SR-V, it's the only thing I could find that would hold all my gear and my center channel. If you have the tools/woodworking skills, by all means, build it yourself.

Here is a link to the credenza I have. They also have it in a 65" version.

I didn't use the doors on mine.

can anyone say flexi???

i made a double with 3 ft threaded rods but was thinking about making a tripple with 2 ft rods when I get a flat screen. i used oak plywood with a nice stain and it came out pretty good. its amazingly stable with no gear on it and with the 100 pounds of amps on the bottom shelf its rock solid.

Thanks for all of the replies. I looked at the link from BMX and I actually like that model. The price is probably about what I would pay for materials if I build my own. The configuration isn't perfect but it would probably work reasonably well. Thanks for the flexi idea chris. It looks nice but is probably too modern and industrialish looking for our room. I also like the look of the unit paradigmdog posted. Pretty clean and minimalist. The price is a little more than what I was looking to spend but it looks like a good unit.

I am still going back and forth between building or buying. If I build my own I can make the specs and features exactly what I want. For example, I think would be cool is to have the inside sides of the source component bays 19-1/8" apart from eachother so that I could put in Middle Atlantic rack mounts if I ever wanted to. I haven't seen this on any productions models. I also would like something where I could have the center speaker, the processor and the amplifier all in the center of the unit (I am a very symmetry-oriented person). I have only seen a few that models would accomodate that. There are other minor details that I would like to see as well. None of these extras are vital by themselves but it is all stuff that is pushing me towards making my own. It's just a matter of finding the time.

Anyway, thanks for all the links and recommendations. It is really helping me go through the process of deciding what I want in a unit and whether I want to make one or buy one. Regardless, I will post here with whatever I end up with.

I got the 75" version in Espresso, though kept the glass doors on. Absolutely love it.

One thing that I wasn't expecting, but was pleasantly surprised by: Plateau supplied a metal reinforcement bar (substantial build). It's screwed into the center section to provide extra support for the top shelf.

Great build quality.
