I recently bought a used 59" Sammy for $600 off a local AVS forum member. The really cool thing about that was that I was able to listen for that infamous buzz. I had my g/f listen for it too. We're both happy with it. It saved me about a grand. That TV had about 3400 hours which is like 2 years worth of viewing. Used and local ... you can do it.
I agree, there are still some good deals to be had locally, especially if you're looking for Panny and Samsung Plasmas. One important thing to learn how to do before you buy local is check the hours on a used set.

LG was the worst experience I have ever had with a TV. I had a 42" I bought in 2013 that died 6 days before the warranty expired fortunately.
- After multiple tech visits
- 4 Motherboard replacements (because it takes 2 calls even when you know the what the problem is)
- Countless hours on the phone with LG, being lied too, saying it was a software issue
- To escalating it up the ladder for a few hours banging my head against a wall
- To filing a case with the better business bureau, waiting 3 months to get them to finally come to the conclusion, that they should replace my TV
- Finally got them to allow a manufacturer return at Microcenter for full credit

I exchanged it for another LG TV, but I did get the 3 year warranty with it, still that was a stupid move on my part I know I will pay for it later. While I am sure no tech support is very good, they, right after Dell, are the worst customer service, tech support company I have ever dealt with.
