Hey guys. I haven't posted in while and I'm here now seeking some help.

I was hoping 2015 would be better than 2014. In 2014, my cat died then my dad died in September. Now, for the new start to 2015, my tv seems to have died. Or, at least, is in a coma.

LG 46ld550

It will power on, but not go further than the logo screen. The power indicator light will not turn green, but slowly flash red. The menu will not come up. I do get sound. I just can't get out of the LG logo screen. I've done the basic checks and attempted hard resets with no success. The tv is about 7 years old(?).

Should be looking for a new display? Suggestions? I know many of you don't care for LG, but this model has served me well.

I hope everyone is well and had a safe New Years Eve.

As an ex-LG owner I feel for you. My LG plasma died after 6 years. The solution is to take it to pro - pay about $350-400 for repairs or pay $450-500 for new TV. I think this one is no brainier.

Just one example:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN46EH5000-46-Inch-1080p-60Hz/dp/B0071NWYP8/ref=sr_du_2_map?ie=UTF8&qid=1420134069&sr=8-2

p.s: If you were EE and had solid understanding of reading and measuring the circuit you probably could find the culprit. If it's in power supply - repair could be cheap, but if it's in video processing board - you'd have to buy a replacement board - expect prices around $150 per board.
Buy a wrong one - and you wasted time and money.

p.s.s: Me and you should learn our lessons and never buy LG stuff again. I know I wont ever again

Hi, Barry. I'm so sorry about your dad. I didn't see you mention that before, if you did.

I did a really quick search and found a suggestion to try a firmware update for those TV symptoms at the link here. Doesn't mean it's a good suggestion :), but it might be worth trying.

From 46 to 55? Nice, but no one ever said: my tv is too large. Catch my drift? ;-)

My buddy has an LG plasma that died. He took it to a local shop and it was only about $125 to get it fixed. I had a Panasonic 50" GT30 that died recently and I took that in. It needed work to one of the boards and that is only going to be $150 to get that fixed. It might be worth checking out.

Drift caught, and I agree 100%. But, I have a small room and don't want to have to change my mount to accommodate a heavier display. So, what I'm saying is, I'm lazy.

I am going to see what happens with the repair, but does anyone have suggestions for 55" display. The Samsung 7150 looks good and has decent reviews. I glanced at Vizio, but I'm not sure about them. I also to look at some Sony models. Suggestions?

I got the display back yesterday and it looks good. But for how long I don't know. Anyone have suggestions for a new display? Anyone?
Like I said, the Samsung 7150 looks good but I'm not sure. The curved screens just make no sense to me so I'll not be interested in that. I'm looking for 55", possibly 60". 4k and smart are not important to me.

Thanks!

What failed on the LG? How much $ to repair?

The Y board is what went out in my Panasonic and they just repaired the board. The Y board in my buddies tv was the culprit as well. Those boards fail because they are toward the top of the tv and get the most heat. If the repair lasts it was a cheap fix.

I can't really advise on which TV, but I did make the decision to let my BluRay be "smart" and not worry about my TV being "Smart".
I saved some money buying the dumbest TV I could find that was on closeout (Samsung 60")
It is cheaper to replace my Blu-Ray than the TV should I decide to increase intelligence!

I agree with dumb TVs. A $40 amazon fire tv stick has more smarts than most of people would need from a tv.

As for specific recommendations, I would wait for new just announced Panasonic fully back-lit led panels announced this CES. They should provide good contrast. Not as good as oled, but still should be ok

I saw an OLED. the picture was really, really nice. But, at $3500.00 for a 55" I think there are better values to be had.

Well I never thought I would be saying this since I have always been a plasma guy but I just bought a 42" M Series Vizio and I have to say I am damn impressed. It is fully backlit with local dimming and the contrast is actually much better than the plasma it replaced. I didn't buy it for the "smart" features but I can say that they actually work well which is amazing to me because I was expecting terrible laggy performance like Samsung and Sony. I was pleasantly surprised. The only downside is the viewing angle that obviously doesn't match up to plasma but it's still very good.

I just can't see spending more money for a TV from Samsung or Sony. I wouldn't buy a Samsung for anything after my experiences installing and servicing them and Sony, while relatively reliable, is expensive for what you get. I think Vizio is becoming a real player now. If you had asked me two years ago I would not even consider a Vizio.

Thanks for chiming in Hi Ho. The funny thing is, I was looking at Vizio's because of full array lighting. Then BSA said to wait for the Panasonics with full array so I felt I was on the right track.
Like you, I was/am reluctant to buy a Vizio. The reviews have gotten better and it seems they have worked some things out. The value can't be denied unless longevity, build quality is an issue.

Well I am a Panasonic fan. They make rock solid products all around. I have not been impressed with their LCD sets to date but I have not seen the ones they just announced. I am interested to see them.

I saw this thread for the first time today, and I assumed it was asking if broadcast and cable television were dead. Too bad it isn't about that; it would have been more fun. ;)

I recently bought a used 59" Sammy for $600 off a local AVS forum member. The really cool thing about that was that I was able to listen for that infamous buzz. I had my g/f listen for it too. We're both happy with it. It saved me about a grand. That TV had about 3400 hours which is like 2 years worth of viewing. Used and local ... you can do it.
