Trying to go audiophile on a (very tight) budget

So, here's some background on me, I'm 22 and I'm a senior at PSU. I've always wanted to get into audio, but I've never had the right funds. Sadly, I've developed a pretty expensive taste as I live right down the road from a Paradigm dealer and I've spent way too much time there, haha... So I'm trying to look for a speaker/amp combo to hook up to my computer (already have a good sound card (HT Omega) so no need to worry there) that would at least sound better than the crap they have out for computer speakers these days (seriously, what they pass off as "thx certified" these days is pathetic). Now get ready for this one... I have... 300 dollars, haha. For both a pair of speakers and an amplifier (don't need a preamp or receiver since I'll just be hooking it up to my computer). So, I've been looking around, and after a little bit of research I've found these:

www [dot] bhphotovideo [dot] com/c/product/356256-REG/AudioSource_AMP100_AMP100_Stereo_Power_Amplifier.html

and

www [dot] jr [dot] com/polk-audio/pe/POK_RTI4_hy_BK/

(no offense, guys, but the url blocking is kinda lame)

I'm not sure if anyone has any experience with that amp, but I'm sure people have opinions on the Polks. So, any recommendations beyond those two? Bass isn't a main concern of mine, so they can be bookshelves. Thanks!

Rather than a pair of bookshelves and an amp, IMO go for a pair of powered studio monitors

The URL blocking is to prevent spammers. Check out Behringer B2031P's or B2030P's. They get recommended often around here because they sound great for their price. The B2031p's go deeper because of the larger woofer and cabinet, but they are pretty big speakers. They also aren't the nicest looking speakers out there. Have you checked out craigslist?

Also, if you're looking at powered speakers then take a look at these:

EDIT: actually I just noticed they are a little over your budget.

edit again: here is the older version, which is 279

You might want to check out highly regarded AudioEngine A5 and add a sub then you have some extra dough (Dayton Sub-120)

That actually makes a lot of sense about the spammers... Pretty good idea, actually, I've never seen that implemented on other forums before. Those Swan speakers look gorgeous, I've never heard anything about them before, but they look like a great candidate. They also look like they should cost way more than 279.... Also, I'm surprised you mentioned Behringer because it seems like that company doesn't have the best reputation in the audio world, but that might be me reading things out of context. I've looked at the Truth speakers before but I haven't been able to find that many reviews of them, and of course I could never find somewhere that sold them to test them out. Well I'm glad I asked, I'm really interested in those Swan speakers now. I might end up getting those when they're back in stock. Thanks all

Swans do looks good, however HiVi (China) speakers are hardly top of the line and I seen very few good reviews for these
Behrigners are hit or miss, but 2030p are truly amazing for their price.

While shopping for monitors look for one of best active monitors : JBL LSR25p
Nothing beats them in terms of audio precision. I seen these on ebay for 'bout $230 pre-owned

How about -
For amplification
Refurb Onkyo receiver from accessories4less or shoponkyo -
Refurb HK receiver from Harman Audio on ebay
Old or new T-amp

Speakers -
Infinity primus p162 audioholics store
Refurb Polk RTIA1 from Polk audio on ebay (Monitor 30 or 40)
Refurb Boston Acoustics, maybe the E40
PSB Alpha

Or go used, maybe Paradigm Atoms if you like the paradigm sound

Behringer products tend to be either hit or miss, and the B2030's are a hit :D

How about the amplified versions of those speakers (the Behringers)?

I'm not sure, I have no experience with them. I stayed away from the powered behringers because I wanted to have flexibility with how I used them. It's not as easy to use them as home theater speakers if they're powered.

IIRC, I read about some reliability issues.
That being said, you may be able to find these at a local Guitar Center or some place that offers an reasonably priced extended warranty with replacement for a couple of years - which may still be cost competitive.

I have a pair of B2031P's and they are good speakers with decent enough bass to get by without a subwoofer. Call around to pro-audio shops in your area. Likely all of these shops carry Behringer and some are bound to have either the 2030 or 2031 in stock that you could listen to. FWIW, my rough rule of thumb is if I can buy local for within 10% of the cost over the internet, I do.

HTH

Edit - There are a lot of great recommendations here. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how far a little money goes whichever of these you follow. Just be very glad you didn't walk into Best Buy and say "I've got $300, set me up":eek::eek:

Axiom

From what I've read, for speakers, Axiom Audio seems to offer speakers just about as good as Paradigm -- for far less money. I've never compared the two myself, but I've been very happy with my Axiom M22s for the last five years. To stay within your budget, see if you can pick up a pair of bookshelves from the auction section of their site.

His total budget is $300, the $300 Axioms would still need amp to power them...

craigslist usually has hidden gems so give that go for sure.

Get a receiver on Craigslist. Stereo receivers go for peanuts. Then get a good pair of bookshelf speakers. You can get those on CL too, but you have to know what to look for ad be a little patient. Sometimes there are killer deals on speakers.

Get any needed cables from Monoprice.

Try to look into lower end bookshelves and an amp off Craig's, many people still stash the older receiver/amp around without the desire to sell it because of the hassle

Alright, how about a little curve ball? I forgot I have an old Denon stereo receiver that must have been from the 80s (I don't have the model number right now), but it's only 33wx2 IIRC. I know it works, but I didn't use it for very long because it didn't like my 6-ohm speakers very much. If I wanted a full sound (as in some lower octaves), do you think I could get away with this? TIA

(btw, I know this might sound like a rambling mess of questions I'm asking, but thanks for answering them!)

i have zero idea about any of the speakers/components listed above. my only advice is to a newbie who obviously already has a taste for good sound. figure out what you really want, save up for that, and buy it. in stages if you have to. and learn this lesson RIGHT now. not knocking your in college, limited budget, and all that. we all have been there. but if you already have a taste for good sound, and start w/ what sounds like a completely reasonable budget, you will buy it... and soon have the itch for "better" sound. you'll be down at the dealer listening, and start thinking upgrade... and you will never see even less than half the money you have already spent on trying to sell what you own.

too long ago, i was in college, had heard what i wanted (nakamichi receiver and cd player, it was awhile ago) and worked and saved and worked and saved... and once i had it that system lasted me for years and years until i eventually bought new speakers years later.

the point is, we all have budget limitations. but you have already heard what you want it to sound like. save your money, and go buy exactly that. you will spend more over time trying to do it piecemeal, buying, selling, upgrading, than if you save up for what you will really be happy with. and yeah, having to be patient and wait for it sucks. but learn this one lesson and you will save thousands and thousands over the next few decades.

other advice, used is often the way to go to stretch your dollar. also find dealers that take trade-ins, as you never know what will show up on trade that you will be able to save a lot of money on. even used, don't be afraid to negotiate.

find what you want, work and save, and build it a piece at a time. beyond the best advice i could ever give any new audiophile.

I am usually a champion of the used market, and typically cringe when I hear behringer monitors given as an audiophile option, but with that budget and the fact they will be used with a computer with a good sound card, might be your best option. I listened to the Behringers when I was looking for powered monitors for a home studio set up...I liked them, though I liked the Rockit 5's better. I know the Guitar Center by me in NJ has em on sale for pretty much 300 on the dot for a pair. use your ears to see which one you like better though.
